Making Range Rods

I am considering making my own range rods from drill rod. How much smaller than the bore (land) size should the rod be? Can anyone give me some specs of a range rod from PT&G? I was planning on turning the whole piece true, then turn one section for the reamer bushing to have a snug fit, drill and tap it for a screw to hold the bushing. Let me know if you've tried this, and what i should try to do exactly.

You do realize that the range rods are tapered don't you ??
Seems like making one would be a lot of time consuming work
when they can be bought for $36.00..........
