Making my own front rest with ???'s

Yep, I'm gonna make my own rest. Just not sure on a few things.

1. Gonna make a basic top, but don't know what size plate to use. Want to use protektor bags.

2. Thread size on main adjustment and leveling feet (1/2, 5/8, 3/4, fine, course)

Thanks,
AK

I will include pics as I go.

I would use fine threads for the adjustments, incorporate a "double rise"(my term) like the Hart or Sinclair, and probably use a 1" diameter main shaft. I would also suggest that you think about a thrust bearing under the mariner wheel, and that you take care that the rest will go at least as low as a Hart. As far as top dimensions go, buy a bag and fill it, and then build around it. I like the bag strap hold down bars like Sinclair uses. Are you going to have a windage top? If so, the latest Sinclair design is a good one, or you could incorporate this adjustment into the base, as several have. If you use a flat top thread form on the main post, and it is fitted closely to the bore that it runs in, you have the option of building a spring plunger into the tip of the locking piece, so that you can make small adjustments without unlocking and relocking the adjustment. In this configuration, you keep the option of locking the adjustment by tightening all the way. Half inch, for the leveling screws should be fine.

Great! Clone one like this: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2009/03/john-loh-front-rest-now-offered-by-sinclair-intl/ and you'll find yourself in Front Rest Heaven.

I was once going to make my own front rest, it would have been fabulous but considering how long it took me to design and build my annealing machine I decided if I wanted to shoot from a decent rest in the next 3 years I'd be better off buying one lol Good luck with the build and always remember who your three best friends in the whole wide world are, Ebay, McMaster Carr and Ax-man.
