Making a stock from a blank

I have nice English walnut blank that I was going to carve for mauser. The mauser is long gone, but I have Savage FV. beautiful shooter with ugly hollow plastic stock. I equally don't like laminate stocks. Love quality fiberglass, but this is beyond my budget. So decided to carve a stock, as a hobby project. Inletted couple rough stocks and glass bedded, but never cut from blank. I wonder if anyone knows good links on the web, or some books which can guide me.
In general, where do you start first? Do you start with action screw holes, from the bottom with triggerguard, or from the top with action? Thank you

Cut the action holes square to start with and then the barrel channel, and then cut away everything that don't look like you want it to......
I use a horse shoeing rasp to do 90% of my external stock work... working on laminates is a plus as you have lines to go by for the final shape and form....

I would take it to one of the numerous guys that have a duplicator. Some of them can get you within .010-.020. Not too expensive and would save you a lot of time.

I to would like to try this.I understand how to make the profile of the stock, that part is nearly done. My question is how you get it inletted properly, I plan on using a bridgeports but where do yo start, Is there a blueprint, book, video. Do you just mill down half the dia. of the action and barrel, then move to mag box, recoil lug, and trigger and put the two holes in for the screws. Also where is the starting point for the 1st bolt that holds the action.

After your material is squared up in the lathe locate your rear tang screw. That is your starting place. Send me an email and I will send pics of my setup.

Rudy,
Hotmail does not like my server and kicked the photos back. I tried all 3 of my email accounts. I did send them to a Buddy and hopefully he can forward them to you.
