I recently read the popular thread about modifying a Magpul AICS mag to make it more reliable with 6BR and improved cartridges. I believed that it could be done without modifying the magazine body or geometry of the spring. Many people have no issues with magpul and BR rounds, but as I am building a dasher repeater it seemed like a fun project.
Follower and baseplate were modeled and modified to work with a spacer in the front of the magazine instead of the back. This allows the spring to operate as it would normally without extra pressure on it. Spacer has a slight ramp to it that does not interfere with loading, and the ramp is held in place at the bottom by a press fit wedge on the new baseplate. Spacer is ~0.3" thick. This kit can be removed and original parts reinstalled without issue.
Follower modifications
- follower shortened to allow room for spacer
- catch to keep follower from tipping was moved rearward
- bump to keep first shell rearward was moved further back
Parts were printed in PETG and appear to be very strong. They also have not had any binding issues and appear to feed well out of my bighorn origin with both 6BR and dasher. With the extra length basically removed from the magazine the shells do not have room to scoot around much.
I would appreciate input from anybody who had feeding issues with magpul AICS magazines. I would also be willing to ship a set for someone to field test in a rifle that previously had issues. They may work fantastic, or they may have unforeseen issues.
