Magpul 700 Hunter Stock Review

Hi guys,

I bought one of these Magpul stocks for my Dasher and since I couldn't find a good review on it, I'm writing one!

I wanted to turn my Dasher into a tactical/practical type rifle without spending big money on a Manners or McMillan stock, AICS mag conversion and the likes, so I looked around for a more affordable option.

I landed on the Magpul 700 Hunter. I'm not sure why its called a "hunter" stock, it really is more of a tactical style rifle stock. I also purchased the AICS mag conversion from Magpul. It comes with one Magpul 5 shot AICS styly mag. All total I had under $300 in this stock conversion.

My Dasher is on a trued and blue printed 700 action with a Douglas #7 barrel and shilen trigger. The Magpul stock will only accept up to a medium palma so I spent a couple hours opening up the barrel channel to fit the bigger barrel.

After getting things the way I wanted, I laid the barreled action in the aluminum bedding block in the stock and noticed the gun wanted to kind of lilt from side to side before I tightened the bottom metal on. I decided to bed it right there and not have to worry about it being straight. Steel bed was used under the front of the action and recoil lug. Once done, the gun fits perfect. Action screws torqued to 45 inch lbs and I was ready to try the stock out, to see if this gun would shoot as good as it did before.

Using my standard load, with 105 Bergers my 5 shot 100 yard groups were agging right in where they were from a McMillan benchrest stock. Even off an Atlas bipod the accuracy was still nearly as good. Three five shot groups averaged .298. I'll take it.

The stock itself is way stiffer than expected and very pleasant to shoot both prone and off a bench. Adjustable length of pull and comb height are nice features however one must purchase different height combs from my understanding. The LOP adjustment comes standard.

Overall if a guy is looking for an inexpensive way to make a 700 into a "taciticool" type of rifle the Magpul is great way to do it on a budget. I don't think it gives up a whole lot to the VERY expensive stocks that are out there.

The plus for me??? The Magpul 5 shot AICS mags feed Dasher rounds flawlessly!

I recently did the same thing. Wanted to put together a budget build 308/6 Dasher for local PRS/FTR matches so I picked up one of the Magpul stocks for under $200.00 from Brownells. I used Krieger MTU contoured barrels and was able to sand out the stock to make them fit. I've only shot it with the 308 barrel and the ergonomics are exceptional for the price.

Where did you get the AICS mag conversions.

The Magpul conversion for the stock will accept AICS MAGS!

I got mine about a year ago. Mag-Pul offers both 5 and 10 shot magazines. These are a really cost effective alternative a big buck comp or hunting rifle. Mine is a 308, but any of the 308 family will fit and feed from the mag.

Thanks for the review. I have this stock for my 10-22 and would like to get one for a 700. I have the bottom metal {plastic} and one of the magazines. For the money you cant go wrong. I will say this, i have Accurate Arms magazines for my other 700 and they are real hard to load. The Magpul loads easy.
I do have one question...the 10-22 comes with an insert for the barrel channel so you can use a sporter or factory style barrel and you take it out to run a bull barrel. Does the 700 stock have this insert or is it just for heavier barrels????? Thanks again.

No inserts. Medium Palma is about the largest diameter it will accept without modification.

If you have a chance how wide across are the "flats" on the forearm at the end of the stock? Trying to figure out max barrel contour that can be made to fit and still look presentable.

Shawn

The flat portion of the forearm closest wo the muzzle is 1 3/8" wide. Further back below the recoil lug it's 1 1/2". This doesn't give you an accurate description of how much you can remove from the barrel channel. The stock is modular and the fore end is two pieces screwed together and there is a lot of empty space between them. There are also the screws used to secure them together that would interfere with excessive routing of the barrel channel. I sanded enough out for an MTU contour barrel to fit/float with no problem. Take a look at the attached video, the OP doesn't disassemble the stock but does discuss it and you will see the screws in the fore end and the hollow space.

Hope this helps.

I channeled it out for a #7 Douglas, which isn't a huge barrel but it's stout. I think a guy could get away with a little larger contour but not much. The screws will dictate how much material one can remove.

Could you offer more detail on fitting the mtu barrel. I am wanting to get this stock and also have that same contour. Don’t want to get it and find out it will not work correctly. Photos would be great. Thanks

I can try take some pictures later today but you should have no problem getting the same barrel to fit.

The only thing that won't look "perfect" is the way the stock is factory inletted for a Palma barrel which has a distinct shank than tapers after.

A #7 Douglas is a straight taper. So you end up with a slight uneven gap towards the receiver. It's pretty minimal and functions fine.

Thanks. I talked to magpul today and they said the mtu would not work and standard Palma is the largest it would take and it couldn’t be modified because the forearm isn’t monolithic and it would weaken the stock. I kinda knew they would have to say that. I have a standard Palma and the mtu is much larger especially just after where the Palma transitions down, the spot you were referring to that won’t be perfect

Been out shooting mine this fall. I broke down and bought a pair of 10-round magazines from MagPul for it.
On a 1-10 scale, it is a solid nine. I am getting a 260 top end for it for Christmas.

I bought the 700 Magpul in 260 around April. I like 2 stage triggers so I put the new Timney 2-stage on and a Little Bastard brake and I love it. The only thing I don't like is I use the high cheek rest and it's in the way during cleaning, I have to take the cheek rest off to run patches in from the breech, but it only requires loosening 1 screw to do it. I just mainly shoot steel from 500-1100 yds and only factory ammo, but I have had to qualify under 1 moa at 500 yds to shoot the longer ranges and it was not a problem.

I have one fs in the classifieds. Loved it but trying to fund another chassis style stock.
