Hi guys,
I bought one of these Magpul stocks for my Dasher and since I couldn't find a good review on it, I'm writing one!
I wanted to turn my Dasher into a tactical/practical type rifle without spending big money on a Manners or McMillan stock, AICS mag conversion and the likes, so I looked around for a more affordable option.
I landed on the Magpul 700 Hunter. I'm not sure why its called a "hunter" stock, it really is more of a tactical style rifle stock. I also purchased the AICS mag conversion from Magpul. It comes with one Magpul 5 shot AICS styly mag. All total I had under $300 in this stock conversion.
My Dasher is on a trued and blue printed 700 action with a Douglas #7 barrel and shilen trigger. The Magpul stock will only accept up to a medium palma so I spent a couple hours opening up the barrel channel to fit the bigger barrel.
After getting things the way I wanted, I laid the barreled action in the aluminum bedding block in the stock and noticed the gun wanted to kind of lilt from side to side before I tightened the bottom metal on. I decided to bed it right there and not have to worry about it being straight. Steel bed was used under the front of the action and recoil lug. Once done, the gun fits perfect. Action screws torqued to 45 inch lbs and I was ready to try the stock out, to see if this gun would shoot as good as it did before.
Using my standard load, with 105 Bergers my 5 shot 100 yard groups were agging right in where they were from a McMillan benchrest stock. Even off an Atlas bipod the accuracy was still nearly as good. Three five shot groups averaged .298. I'll take it.
The stock itself is way stiffer than expected and very pleasant to shoot both prone and off a bench. Adjustable length of pull and comb height are nice features however one must purchase different height combs from my understanding. The LOP adjustment comes standard.
Overall if a guy is looking for an inexpensive way to make a 700 into a "taciticool" type of rifle the Magpul is great way to do it on a budget. I don't think it gives up a whole lot to the VERY expensive stocks that are out there.
The plus for me??? The Magpul 5 shot AICS mags feed Dasher rounds flawlessly!
