Magnum vs. Ultra Mag. action

How can I tell if a Remington 700 magnum action was originally a standard magnum or ultra mag originally. I know the mag boxes are different, but other than that, is there any difference?

Call Remington with the serial numbers and they will tell you what it was originally.

Calling Rem Hdqtrs in NC would be a waste of time/money as they haven't a clue.

The mag box is "windowed" for the SAUM & Ultra mags as previously mentioned.
The feed rails measure .562" width on an OEM Rem 700 L/A Ultra Mag.
Rails are approximately .012"-.015" wider per side than a std belted magnum action.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for.

If you can't visually tell may I ask why do you care?

Because if the feed rails are different between the two, (which, apparently they are), I don't want any surprises when it comes to feeding issues....

Tony.

According to Nathan Foster (7mm Practical wildcat) of Terminal Ballistics Research, Rem. only makes 2 action lengths;long and short. I had the same question because I'm building a Practical on a Savage action now. I may build another one on a Rem. action that is a Sendero 300 Ultra now. Paul

While it is true Remington offers only 2 action lengths, there are subtle differences in the feed rails depending on the original chambering such as noted for the Ultra Mags.....another would be feed rail variations for the Fireball cartridges.
