Magnum Primers?

I'm about to start load development for a .308 and I have 500 CCI 250 Magnum Rifle Primers on hand. Good choice for a primer or not?

Better than nothing I suppose yet a lot depends on what your plans are for the ammo you'll be loading.

Do you hunt? In cold weather?

Magnums show their advantage in that area, otherwise lower SD's are usually characteristic of non-magnum varieties.

I'm using this new to me .308 (Savage 10 FCP LE McMillan) for a personal challenge of mine. That is to shoot a 12" steel target @ 1000 yards. Just something I have decided I wanted to try to do. Using Sierra 175gr tipped matchkings.

spclark is right. Magnums usually work better in cold weather for hunting, slow burning powders or big charges of powders. As a rule of thumb if the charge is under mid 60's in weight the regular or match is usually more accurate. Anything over that and can try magnums and it might work better. Once you get past 4831 in the burn rate chart, magnums may again help you. You have to test to see what works best for you. If I had I 308 I would be trying Varget and a few others in that burn rate area. I would also get regular primers or match regular primers. I think you will be a lot happier. Matt

IA Shooter,
Just keep in mind that the load you come up with in this cold weather with that type of primer MAY be over pressure when it gets hot outside. You will probably have to drop back a grain or so and re-test the load to be safe.
