Mack Bros Actions

Anybody using a Mack Bros action? Thanks,

Pete
Pete, I've got a single shot version. For a replacement 700, they're a very nice action with a lot of good features. If you're considering it for a real Benchrest action...like for Hunter class...it has some quirks that wouldn't work for me. But then again, that's not the market they are serving.

A few shots of mine. I added a center action screw and floated the tang when bedding it:

I was looking at the single shot version today and seems like you could be into one of them as cheap as a Rem. 700 after you buy a doner action/bolt and have it trued up, plus a has a few xtra improvements over factory 700 action. Website shows none in stock so don't know what kind of lead time there would be.... Al would you care to elaborate on the quirks you mentioned. Feel free to PM me if you have time and would rather not go into it on open forum.... Thanks

I have a brand new single shot Evo 2 new in the box. 308 bolt face. I'll take $820 shipped.

I have several. No quirks that I noticed. It's basically like a totally badass Rem 700 with all the tricks.

No problem.

First off, I love my Mack Bros. action. The quality is top notch and the indexable recoil lug makes life really easy. The tenon print they provided was dead on. In short, they are a well done 700 clone. I'll buy another if the need arises.

The quirks are things that I'd find undesireable in a true Benchrest action used in a competitive environment....like NBRSA or IBS registered tournaments.

-The bolt to receiver clearance on this one is right at .004. For a non aluminum bodied action, .0015-.002 is more desireable. For those that haven't dealt with this seemingly small detail...you can see this difference 'on target'.
- Flat bolt rather than a coned bolt.
- The firing pin spring is short with thicker coils compared to other actions. Even though the spring pressure is right at 23 lbs, the bolt effort feels heavier than that. This will cause the gun to be more upset in the bags and will cost time in reaiming and resettling the gun.
- The trigger hanger could be better designed. The front has a lip that fits into a cut and it then pivots backward to seat into the recess and is retained with a single rear screw. Servicing the trigger between relays by dropping it out the bottom isn't going to happen. The barrelled action would need to be removed. Quite honestly, the trigger hanger just compromises the size of the rear pillar you can use...which is a shame because the rear tang is really beefy. On any 700 clone, my preference for trigger mounting is the factory cross pins.

Of course, in 95% of applications none of those things would be an obstacle. :)

Good shootin'. Al

Yes right at .250 pin fall. Mine has virtually no cock on close with a Jewell trigger. Mack Bros. does offer different trigger hanger offsets for triggers that 'wander' ;) from the 700 spec. for trigger connector piece sear placement. The loading port is a bit longer than a standard 700 so the port opening on the stock can be lengthened to match. Or not.
