M70 Short Action 284 Winchester

Anybody have any experience loading the 284 Winchester with 150-160 class bullets in a Model 70 Short Action?
I'm considering purchasing a M70 short action donor rifle, with the long term goal or rebarreling it down the road to 284.

This would be a long range hunting rig, not a competitive match gun.

With a 162gr ELDX for example, is there enough magazine length to still allow enough powder for say 2850fps with a 26" barrel?

Just kicking some tires before i decide to purchase the donor or not.

Thanks folks.

Not the M70 but in the Rem 700 SA I do. 25" barrel. COAL of 2.975 fits in the DBM. I run the 162 Amax at 3000 fps with RL17. H4350 gave decent velocity too. Well over 2850. Think I was at around 2900+ with it running at 2.900 OAL

I'm at .3080 and can still use the middle screw, I think I'm going to eliminate the middle screw and think
I can get another .150 this is not a mauser style ejector action.

I have a factory Winchester 70 284 with the box mag. The factory barrel is a 1/10 and have shot a few rounds out it with 160 and it shot nice for a factory gun. Some where I have the paper work based on the serial number it was of the last of 1of 200 guns made in the New Haven factory

There was approximately 200 DBM model 70s made across all the cartridges it was offered in. I've been told there was probably less than 30-40 of them put into circulation in .284. If you have a 284, it's rare. It's worth a nice buck, take care of it. I've never run anything bigger than 150s out of mine but they shoot great.

I have a few short action M70s built that have the factory mag box and I keep the COAL to 2.950 or less so I don't have feeding issues. These are all hunting rifles.

I would rate mine 95+

Hey only joined this forum to say thanks for that info, I have a Model 70 in .284 and had no idea how rare it was. I inherited it and had just listed it on gunbroker. the price jumped up real fast so i had to see why.

That's a clean rifle. I bet it exceeds $2000.00 (or close to it) before it's over.... Good luck with the sale!

what kind of grade would you give it based on what you see in the photos?
Nice wood. Some of the Classics had grade AA to AA+, pretty stuff, lots of figure.

Pics from my 1994 Winchester catalog. It lists a 1:10 twist.

The DBM bottom metal is pretty much an equivalent of the FN SPR and PBR rifles.
Pic for reference. M70 SA two piece, FN production one piece, FNH DBM

Different action, but my 162 Amax load is 3.108”

ETA: Guess the OP got it sorted out, he hasn’t been back since January.

My opinion, it's 95% or better. The 2-7 leupold is a nice scope for it too... Do you happen to have the original box? If so, add it to your listing.

Only the slightest of wear as shown in these pics...
Pic #5 shows a tiny specle to the right of the lettering on the barrel.
Pic #15 shows the slightest of blueing loss at the muzzle.
Pic #18 shows some rubbing marks on the forend, but I might be incorrect. Might just be a bad pic...

I'd be all over that rifle if I didn't already have a couple.... Very nice!

I'm going to post a link to your ad on another site.... There will be a lot of interest in it. Maybe it help you out.

Thanks man, and here's the updated listing. I appreciate your guys

only thing i notice is the bluing on the muzzle, I'm not seeing anything on the for end, and the speckle was probably like a dust speck because I'm not seeing that either. one of the photos has a random orange spot on the bolt but i rubbed that off (think it was oil) it looked like a rust spot in the photo. i updated the listing to show it since i couldn't take that picture down. thing is pretty spotless besides the tinge of bluing wear at the muzzle
