M24 vs Rem Varmint contour for 260. rem build

What is your preference?

Building a 260 rem 26" bbl for mulipurpose of coyote and crow huntin to precision sniper shooting 200-800 yards.

If this is for informal target shooting I would go with the one that is the heaviest contour between the two.IMHO I built one with a varmint contour and wish it were heavier(stiffer).

There is a light target contour that's in between the 2 choices mentioned. I sometimes think the sendero brls are a little light but the light varmint & M24 rifles feel awful heavy. I've been looking at the light target for a while I just haven't taken an opportunity to build on one yet.

Really depends on how much walking around you will do. The M24 will get very heavy if you are carrying it off and on all day. Like Jon said above, if it's mostly used off a rest and never that far from the truck then the M24's weight will not be an issue.

Good shooting

I have a 27" Rem Varmint profile on a M70, it's not bad to hunt with. It's quite manageable.

My other is 26" 1.250 straight. I'm not toting that one.....not far anyways.

A little dated post here but I have used both contours for what you indicate and if you are going to carry it much at all, get the Sendero. You will not gain much advantage with the M24 in the long range precision rifle shooting anyway and it is too heavy for hunting. The Sendero will do anything the M24 will do if the rifle is set up right.

I've used more sendero contour bbls than any other for my tactical rifles, and have been very satisfied with the accuracy. I also like the heavy Palma, which winds up being very similar in weight when finished at 26".

On the lighter end of the deal, I've seen guys shoot very well in LR practical/tactical matches with 243s in Krieger #5 sptr contour, which would be about 1/2lb lighter than either a sendero or hvy Palma. So far, my only experience with this contour has been with a 250 Ackley built on a SA M700 in a B&C #1000 stock, which shoots very well. It's still no light weight hunter, as mine weighs an ounce or two over 11lbs with steel Williams BM & Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 scope.

OP, I shoot a fair number of practical/tactical matches each year with my 260's, running a 26 inch Rem varmint contour on them. Never believed that I needed anything more, with regards to contour or barrel length. Also imho, I think 26 inch is the optimum length for the 260 for these sort of matches. And to be honest they are heavy enough as it is.

The middle is a 1-18" straight 260 the right is a varmint contour 7-08 neither is bad. But all my rifles are over 12lbs
