M1a sights

Basic question but I tried searching and could not find the answer. On a standard m1a does anyone know what velocity ammo lines up closely with the numbers on the elevation sight adjustment using 168 great ammo? In other words, ballpark, what can I replicate to get the 5 to be correct at 500 yards.

I shot my new m1a with what seems to be a universal load of 41.5 grains of h4895 and zeroed with a 6 o'clock hold at 100 but 500 and 750 yards we're way high. I didn't Chrono but I don't think that's a hot load even in 100 degree weather but I only ended up dialing 3 for 500 yard hits and 5 for 750 yard hits.

Ignore the numbers. Zero the rifle and count the clicks down to the bottom from your zero, write this number in your diary, data book or on the stock, or someplace. Check this zero every time you shoot and book keep the historical average. Of course when you change loads you will have to establish a new zero for that load. Once you get a zero at one yard line, 100 yards or 200 yards or..... you can use the standard come ups to get a good estimate for the other yard lines. If you need help find some old guy who has a distinguished badge that he got shooting the M14. There are still a few of them around.

If your M1A has a M14 elevation dial on it the numbers are in meters calibrated for M80 ball ammo,147 gr bullet at 2730 fps. It may have a M1 dial on it which was for 30-06 ball ammo.
Just do what every M14 ,M1A and M1 shooter has done forever, get a zero with the ammo you have and count the elevation clicks down to the bottom of the sight. Record that setting for that distance and ammo. When you want to shoot that distance again count the clicks up.
Yep.there still a few of us old guys around that legged out with the M14.

Thanks guys. Yes I have a local expert who has shot and worked on them since Vietnam. He did a full workup on my standard m1a and it shoots better than I do now. I am shooting 2" 10 shot groups and he easily out shoots me so I know for sure the rifle is capable of better. I know I can just count clicks and use moa come ups I was mostly curious what ammo the dials lined up with.

Enjoy shooting the M14 it is a real rifle for real men and shoots real bullets.

If you are shooting 168 or 175 match loads, the clicks will be pretty much on out to 300yds or so....

The standard M14 rear sight has a click value of approximately 1 MOA for both elevation and windage. For 1/2 MOA windage there is the NM(national match) rear sight base and windage knob. The standard base and knob have a 28 pitch thread the NM base and knob have a 56 pitch thread.
The M1A match rear sight used a less expensive version consisting of 8 notches cut in the windage knob and a small ball bearing set into the right side of the sight base.
For 1/2 MOA elevation there is the NM elevation slide with the hood on it. The aperture in the hood is drilled .004 inch off center. Turning the hood up or down gives you the 1/2 MOA change.
The national match parts are all marked with a NM stamp.
