M1 in 308Win for Wild Pigs

A few times in the past, I had wild pigs at bait corn and was using a bolt rifle in 280Rem. I only had time to knock over two, at the most, before all were gone, into heavy cover.

On another forum, a man was selling an M1 Rifle that he built up with a commercial 308Win barrel and claimed that he'd only zeroed and not used it. The price was right, so I bought it and paired it up with a B-Square "no tap" scope mount and a Burris 3-9x40mm scope.

Where I hunt it is legal, even in deer season, to have eight in the mag. My double seat tree stand has a rigid, padded rest in front that works out to hold the weight of the loaded, scoped M1 Rifle.
At age 77, in need a rest, unless I can get the rifle up and shoot one round, fast!

With my rig, shooting with no obstructions at 80 yards, my best score is 4 pigs down, before all have scattered.
Pigs are smart and scatter fast, but there is a few moments after the first shot, provided that the first pig hit drops in place, where they just look around before heading out.

Everyone in my extended family is now grinding pork into sausage.

Every time you ask a "best for something" question, no one is gonna give you the best answer for you. You're gonna get the best answer for the answerer because the person who answers you has gained some experience with different things and has figured out what works for himself. To find the best caliber for you, you'll have to accumulate some experience with different calibers to figure which is best for you. The answers others provide are great answers and recommendations but they're not the "best" necessarily.
Now some calibers that are good/great for the task at hand are the 30-06, 7mm-08 Remington, the .308 Winchester, 45-70, 30-30, .270 Winchester, 8mms Mauser, 7x57 Mauser, .35 Whelen, .35 Remington, and the .358 Winchester. And for shotguns, the 12 gauge with slugs is pretty much the way to go. Some of these rounds are better than others for different situations, but they're all pretty good.

I have killed a few deer with the original M1 Garands in 30-06 over the years. I have owned 3 of them. Only have one now but it is a like new 1953 Springfield. Best game bullet I ever found for the M1s is the Sierra 165 gr BTHP Game King. It is as accurate as the 168 gr Match King and runs through the M1s perfectly. I had an uncle that used to deer hunt in VA where they run deer with dogs. He was a Marine Korean war vet and really knew how to handle an M1 Garand. He once killed 6 deer as they one at a time jumped a page wire fence at the edge of a field. He was about 60 yards from where the deer jumped the fence. As each one jumped the fence he popped them. All 6 were laying with in 10 yards of each other.

A M1 garand sounds like an excellent pig gun to me.

I popped a large sow with my Garand about six weeks ago. Range was about 330 yds & I was using target ammo. When it hit the dust flew off her, she rolled over a time or two, got up & ran off. Since then I've loaded up 165 gr Hornady spire points that I had laying around. Hope to pop a few more when cooler weather gets here. Really like the Garand.
