M1 Garand 30-06

I am new to the M1 Garand shooting I recently bought an M1 took it out for the first shooting and the shells will not chamber and cycle to fire the next round after looking the rifle over I can see that the operating ron is not moving forward enough to push the shell in. Any ideas???

Figure out if it is chambered for 30/06 or 308!

i had no problem going from 06to 308 with my op rod. Units are a bit picky on powder selection. as in burn rate being to slow which scews up the timing and can bend the op rod. there are other mechanical functions that can cause this as well. anything around burn speed of 4831 is to slow. 4895 or silmlar seems to pop up in my meager brain cells as a better burn rate. OP doesn't spec what he was using- tear unit down and clean the gas system make sure op rod is not bent.

Is your ammo at fault? Make sure the case shoulder is .003" shorter than your fired brass after resizing.

If your reloads are "too tall" the bolt won't close.

As already mentioned, .30-06 ammo will not fit in a .308 chamber. Confirm your rifle's caliber.

Why? I've reloaded for thr Garand for 40 years, 150 to 173 grain bullet, powders from 4064, 748, 4895. Ejection at 3:00 about 3 feet. It's a gas gun that like faster powders at 75% loads.

If you've checked the chamber and eliminated ammo as a variable, I'd check out the op rod spring. I generally replace all of mine as soon as I get the rifle with Wolff springs.

Did you clean and lubricate before you started shooting it ? Dry Garand is not a happy Garand. Needs some grease.

Check the Recoil spring, it may be weak or worn

Why? I've reloaded for thr Garand for 40 years, 150 to 173 grain bullet, powders from 4064, 748, 4895. Ejection at 3:00 about 3 feet. It's a gas gun that like faster powders at 75% loads.

i agree with all that except t seems mine throws brass out there 20 feet and i didnt think loads were hot

The Civilian Marksmanship Program site is a great source of information for both old and new M-1 owners in addition to MANY M-1 shooters on this site.

M-1's and M1A need grease, not oil, in certain places to function reliably. Reloads for M-1's must be full length sized. Several years ago a friend called me and asked me to come look at his newly acquired M-1. He had a loaded round stuck about 3/4 of the way in the chamber of a match prepared M-1 and could not extract it. When asked if it was factory or reloaded ammo he told me he had reloaded it like "all of his match ammo" I knew he was an neck size only guy. Had to use a 12" length of 2x4 and a 3lb machinist hammer to "pile drive" the op rod open while muzzle was securely held in safe direction to eject the round.

Gave him 1/2 a can of GI ball and told him to read up on his new purchase.

He probably ended up continuing to reload just like he always "ustacould".

+ 1 for this. My CMP Garand in .30-06 did the same thing first time out. Cleaned and lubed. All good after that.

and don't over think the grease. I've been using red n tacky for almost 30 years without incident, it's what I had way back when figured if it worked for trailer hitches, it should be fine for the Garand....and it is.
