I came into a 1963 Model 70 Featherweight in 30-06. The trigger was scratchy and heavy (~5 lbs), so I dug into it (never even looked at a Winchester trigger before.) First I stoned and polished the sear surfaces, and backed off the tension lock nuts as far as I could, still maintaining bare minimal spring compression, which took the outboard nut to the trigger body (hard stop). Pull weight dropped to about 4 lbs and smoother.
I read on a couple of forums about Ernie The Gunsmith's trigger springs, so I ordered a "Hunter". It's about 2/3 the length of the OEM spring. I installed it with minimal compression and it came in at ~1 lb. Added compression and now it's a nice smooth 1.75 lbs with minimal overtravel. The spring was only $6.94 and with shipping a total of $10.90. What a bargain.
Here's the new spring installed, me holding the old spring alongside for comparison.
