Lyman Gen5 powder scale

I've never been fond of lots of electronics and after almost two years this thing just drives home my opinion.
Yeah I'm ranting cause I'm still irritated... Today's session with 2460 it hit the programed weight 8 out of 100 tries. It's usually a tenth low but occasionally 2 tenths high. I've kinda gotten used to that. The kicker is the unit freezes up every 15-25 rounds and the power has to be cycled to get it working again. Doesn't matter if it's on auto repeat or manually repeating.
Still it's faster than the balance beam but I'm not sure the frustration is worth it.

Had a Lyman Gen6 for about a year when it started to malfunction. Called Lyman and the tech on the phone told me do this do that but it didn't work. I had to send it back and when it was returned 2 months later it came with a note that it was repaired. Worked for 30 minutes. Called back and spoke to the same tech and was told there was nothing they can do. I threw it out and will never buy a Lyman product again.

Have you tried replacing the discharge tube shaft seals? They wear and powder can become lodged in the gap that then binds the tube. A spare set of seals was supplied with the unit.

I’ve had a good experience with my Gen 5 since 2016. Yes, it often “misses” the user entered charge weight but that is not a problem for me as I set it to be .1 grains low then manually trickle up.

I quite using mine for ball powder. It works As intended for any extruded powder. A standard powder thrower works great for all ball powder and its faster.

The seals went bad in mine and I replace them. They went bad a second time and I bought an RCBS unit and never looked back and never an issue. The lyman would lock up and labor hard to get powder out. Fine grain powders were horrible in it

I prefer to keep it as simple as possible especially when it comes to reloading.

When my 50-year-old Ohaus finally went south, I purchased a Lyman Brass Smith cost effective beam balance. It has worked very well for me. I do trickle each powder charge since I use stick powders only for rifle. It returns to zero, and routine check with calibration weights shows it's within + or - .1 grain or less throughout the range of charges I use.

I guess if you are high volume reloader and pressed for time this is not a good option. I average about 1,000* reloads of rifle a year, so this works for me.

*Before the component crisis. :(:(:(

I have the Gen6 and so far so good. I loaded 100 rounds using Win 748 yesterday with no problem. It is not as good a device as the Pact dispenser which it replaced. The Pact was consistent, accurate and faster. Wish they were still available.
