Lyman Brass Smith Trimmer

I have one and I feel it works just fine. I'm using a WBY at the moment and they don't make a case holder for it. That's the only "problem" I have with mine. Also, feed the case slowly and run the motor at its highest speed. IF you run the motor too slow it will rip the case from your fingers! Don't even bother asking how I know this!!

Thanks, mine is suppose to be here tomorrow and I'll set it up for a try. I'm running the rcbs power trimmer know and it works ok but it is very slow when you have several hundred to 1000 cases to do.

The price just seems cheap.

Other than having to make large adjustments when you switch calibers, I find it to be better than other systems that I have used (Forster with & without a drill driver & 2 different Lee setups). The results are fast and consistent (+/- 0.001"). The variable speed feature died so it only runs at full speed but I found that I was running it there anyway.
You do tend to blister your thumb a leather glove is useful.

I have used one for about two years now. I haven't switched calibers yet, it's set up for my 6.5 CM. When I was shooting Hornady, Federal and Starline, it always trimmed a bit, when I switched to Peterson it's just a step to insert a piece of brass, they never seem to grow.

I have one, used it on 4k plus worth of 5,56 brass this winter. Easy to use and set and it did a job if being consistent, I did have to adjust it a couple times but I think it got bumped or something. The adjustable speed is nice and the way it uses the shoulder.

Good to hear the positive, not hearing it mentioned and then see it was on sale I had to watch some videos which seemed good but ya can't always go by videos.

It doesn't look as though it has a holder to keep alignment of the case true. Am I missing something? Gracey/Giraud/WFT/etc. have a holder similar to a chamber to align the axis of the case with the cutter. The Lyman looks a though it has a hole to hit the datum line on the shoulder, but no case support.

One of the things I like most about the Gracey and Giraud trimmers is that they trim and do the inside (VLD) and outside (45*) chamfers at the same time; with the volume I shoot and reload that"s a real time saver. Is that an option with the Lyman?

I grit my teeth at the cost of the Gracey and Giraud, but it's money well spent. My Gracey is ~22 years old and still going strong, and still using the first notch on the Giraud carbide cutter. It really buy once, cry once. The price has approximately tripled since I bought mine, but that's in step with inflation. I bought the Gracey before the Giraud hit the market, and would probably buy the Giraud today; however, there isn't enough of an upgrade in capability for me to switch until the Gracey dies (if ever).

Are you talking about bushings?

I like mine. I keep a piece of painters tape with the trim numbers on the top. I also had to use my reamer to modify a couple of bushings for the oddball wildcat cartridges. And yes, a rubber gardening glove should be included!!!. Real fast and consistent. Mine started to make a real bad noise after about a year and a half.
Out of warranty, no problem. I called, and they replaced it free of charge.

I have had one for going on 2 years. .308, 6mm cartridges, and thousands of .223. Works fine and easy enough adjustment. It is not as fast and doesn't chamfer inside and out like the way more expensive pieces of equipment, but you definitely get your money's worth from it.

I got a 220 volt unit that was just about free, just need to find the right plug in and run another line.

Is there a bushing that might possibly work for the 270 wtby mag. Lyman doesn't have a listing for one in their chart.

I believe the Lyman case trimmer does just that, i.e. trim cases, and nothing more. Lyman's web page does not mention anything about this unit chamfering the inside/outside of the case mouth. Assuming it does not chamfer the inside/outside of the case mouth, it is not necessary to have a "perfect" alignment of the case mouth concentric to the cutter, as the trimming is only done at a 90 degree angle to the case long axis. Units that also chamfer the inside/outside of the neck require a much better alignment with respect to the center axis to keep the inside/outside chamfer reasonably true. The alignment still doesn't have to be "perfect", as variance in neck wall thickness and any very slight mis-alignment will be taken care of by spinning the case with fingers while it is trimming/chamfering in the unit, leaving a relatively uniform chamfer around the case mouth. Nonetheless, there is less forgiveness with mis-alignment in the units that also chamfer in addition to trimming.
