Lyman All-American 8 reloading press owners.

After many moons of searching the web for what is the best, or what can be the best turret press for the money. And is available today. I went with the Lyman 8 turret. The 419 is nice. But so is a exta 1000 dollars for something else. Plus there are some things I really didn't care for on the 419.
I set up my orange press and fixed the plate wobble. I have zero wobble at all station and it turns easy enough.
I tested several sized and bullet seating functions and I can say the brass has less than .0005 run out, measured at the neck. Loaded with bullet .001 and less. measured 2/3 down the bullet. Note fireformed brass or brass that has been loaded several times has just about zero run out from the chamber.
Just about every thing you buy today, new or used is broke. So might as well get a solid product and fix it.

I'm kicking around the idea of offering a repair for thoses without access to a lathe, on the Lyman 8. I'll have a better idea later this week.

Thanks,

Larry

Mine seems decent enough as it is to load pistol rounds.
I quit using the primer fill tube and just dump some primers on a leather pad and load the primer cup holder one at a time.

I tend to use mine for precision rifle ammo. I have a 550c for pistol. I have several single stage presses for precision ammo and I need to cut back. So a turret was the answer.

The priming set up was never consider for use.

I use mine for pistol. I did buy the Creedmoor kit to help with lock up and moving the turret. I have not measured runout. I like the press for what it is. I use my Forster for long rifles.

That would be one way of repairing the issue. But the cause is still present. I checked all the cast iron measurement and where very accurate, the steel bushing is flat on one side and not so much on the other, plus I removed .001 after it was square. And now its perfect.

Hi @Larry Koch. I know this is an older post, but was wondering what the fix was that you performed on your Lyman All-American 8 press. I just bought one, and am waiting for it to get delivered in a few days. I was just curious in case I had any slop issues once I get it mounted up. Thanks!

The steel Bushing spacer where the turret rotates around. One side end is square the other side wasn't. At least that was what I experienced. I have a lathe and squared the one side, and now there is little to No play. Just enough for it to rotate.
I get less than .0005 thousand case neck run out. But I also make my own die locking bushings, any one that is split, will not be as accurate, imho. I sold my super duper single stage press because this work quite well if not better. To me its the bargain of the year, 1/2 price compare to green and red machine. I have no Idea how the other press are out of the box. If you have 12 -100 dollar bills laying on the floor, get the aluminum machine. I would because its the best, or not.

Thank you for getting back to me on this Larry, I appreciate it. Once I get the press mounted up and situated, I will then measure the slop... if any. I have access to a lathe and grinder if needed. Like you said, I couldn't beat the price for what I'm getting. If it needs a slight modification, then so be it. I like working with my hands anyways!

The cast body and turret measure next to perfect. I was made aware of a aftermarket kit for this press to help eliminate the turret from rocking. If you dont have a lathe. I believe the one side thats not square is done on purpose by the manufacture.
