Lucas Bore Guides

Does Mike Lucas still make bore guides? I just got a new Remington 700 SPS DM in 270 caliber. I have emailed Mike twice and received no answer. I notice the posts were a couple years old. Is he still around and making bore guides. Thanks. I am a newbie to shooting.

You gotta keep in mind that many of these shops are one man operations/ they do it all from designing and making the product, ordering material, answering the phone ( or e-mails), packaging, shipping, etc. so you have to be willing to wait, most of the time just a short while, sometimes a little longer, but the product will be worth the wait. ;)

Mike is still actively in the bore guide business, he is a one man operation and is usually very prompt. I still think he makes the best one out there. Like was said above, he may be away from home for a few days, he is retired from the refrigeration business now so has more time to do his own things.

Thanks for the responses. I understand the one man shop thing. I have read that Mike makes the best, that's why I want his. I don't even have a cleaning rod yet. I am trying to figure that all out. One thing I haven't figured out is how long the rod needs to be. The barrel is 24 inches. Would 30-32 inches be too short? I am a newbie basically. Again, thanks for the replies. I will email Mike again.

You'll have to take a measurement from the muzzle to the rear end of the receiver, add the length of the bore guide that will extend beyond that, and maybe another inch or so, to be sure the cleaning brush and jag will clear the muzzle. I like to keep my rods as short as possible, to do all that, but not be overly long where they will flex a lot.

You will also need to tell Mike what cleaning rod you intend to use since he'll furnish his guide with the proper insert for your cleaning rod diameter. As to rod length a little longer won't hurt in case you decide to go with a longer barrel in the future. I just determine how long it needs to be to just allow the jag to clear the muzzle to remove the patch. I then take some white medical tape and wrap the rod to create a stop at that length. Works like a charm and lasts till you want to remove or change it. If you plan on swapping back and forth between a jag and a brush you'll need to make it long enough for the ferrel (SP?) to clear the muzzle so you can unscrew the brush without dragging it back across the crown.
