LRPV in 6BR-To bed or not to bed?

Hello all,

I am struggling with consistency on my Savage LRPV 6br. It is the 12 twist version. I am shooting 31gr. of H-4895, a 70gr. Sierra HPBT match bullet with Federal 205 primer. I have read about and tried the action-to-stock screw tension tests, and had minimal success. Do I need to go ahead and bed the action and start over? I have the Devcon 10110 on hand ready to go. I have had really good 5 shot groups in the .3's but the next 5 shot group will open up significantly whether it be the next group that day or the first group the next day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried several different powders with several different bullets, and every time i try to prove a load, it doesn't pan out.

I would bed the action and then follow the directions in the above article. Savages are big in my area and I follow this article for all the ones I set up. Pretty much all the Savages that I have done come in with 30 in. lbs. on the front two action screws (or just the front action screw depending on a 2 or 3 screw action) and 25 in. lbs. on the rear screw. So if I do a Savage and for some reason the customer doesn't want to put in the time to do this torque routine I set the torque to 30 and 25 in. lbs. and it hasn't let me down yet.

Tony,
After you bed it and just for giggles try changing to the 400 cci primer with that powder, it may help some.

I own two of them in 6BR with 8 twist. The first one started out like a house on fire. After a few outings she started opening up and i was asking all the same questions you are. I was climbing walls trying to figure out what went wrong. I had the bolt timed and trued and she came back to life. What are u doing for case prep?

I am turning necks just enough to clean them up, deburring inside of primer hole just slightly, cutting primer seat just enough to get a even cut, and sizing for about .002" shoulder bump. I weigh my cases, but I am wondering if I need to anneal the cases for an even tension??

Thanks.

Tony.

I just got in my own LRPV 6BR in 12 twist Friday, but it is the HS-Precision stock with the aluminum bedding block. You obviously don't have that one, right? My understanding is that it will not need bedding. I can't fire it until my picatinny rail gets here, hopefully tomorrow.

I bought it because a guy who had one beat all the custom guns at our match last Sunday except the one he 'tied' with for first. At 200 yards, he just grazed and knocked the 5th paintball off the card while the custom gun broke all 5.

My understanding is that it will not need bedding.

That Aluminum bedding block is not a one size fits all... Shoot it as is for a while and then notice the uneven wear lines on the interior... It really needs to be skim bedding for the best results...

Thanks for all of the reply's. I do think I will bed when I get a free weekend. When doing so with an aluminum block, I want to squeeze down just enough to make light contact with the aluminum block correct?
