LRPV barrel/caliber swap

Hey guys,

So after a lot of research and shopping, I've happened into a like new LRPV

It's .223 Rt bolt, left port single shot 1 in 7"

My only hesitation is that I REALLY wanted 6BR, but it was a great deal that I couldn't pass up.

So here's the question - how easy/difficult/impossible would it be to make this a switch barrel rig or a permanent 6BR?

From what I understand all I need to do is get a new barrel and bold head, is that accurate?

I have a crazy idea of making this a "switch barrel" am I dreaming big here?

Any input is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks guys,

-J

Met a fellow at the range the other day that had 3 Savages and about 6 barrels. He could switch them in only a few minutes. You need a minimum headspace gauge and a barrel wrench. Sharpshooter Supply sells the wrench. He told me that to get the barrel out the first time you may need an action vice?? But after that only the wrench.

jrkotz,

You are correct. The Savage makes a great switch barrel gun. I have a LRPV in 6BR and have a Douglas 20 Tac barrel. New Savage 6BR barrel will run about $275 to $300, I would go for a custom barrel, they will run about $350 or less.

I like to used a nut wrench and a action wrench, makes it much easer.

I just happen to have a LRPV that came as a 1:7 twist 223 that now also has a 6mmBR barrel and extra bolt for switching. Mr. Larry Racine did the work and it can be switched in the stock in very little time and effort. I went with 2 bolts so the change would be possible with the least amount of time. http://www.lprgunsmith.com/index.htm

Mine no longer uses the Savage barrel nut system, it is like a Remington switch barrel gun.

Thanks for the replies guys! Looks like I have some parts/tools to buy!

ANY tips/details appreciated, first time bench/precision shooter..

A bit unsure on "headspace" issue

+1 on Larry Racine's work.

Once you break the nut loose from the factory, as mentioned, and you snug up the nut, I use two hits on the nut wrench with a 3 pound hammer, but you can use virtually any hammer. I set it hard against the go gauge, and tightening down the nut brings it out about .002 for a minimum chamber setting.
