Low Recoil 300wsm Loads

Does anyone have some data on an accurate, low recoil 300wsm load. I am awaiting arrival of a Savage 12 BVSS in 300wsm but want to work my way up to full loads. I also feel like shooting within 500yds I don't necessarily need full house loads.

I am not looking for the most accurate load you have just a decent .75-1moa load that will work in a 1:12 twist barrel, not punish the shoulder too much and ring some steel.

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

+2 on a muzzle brake.I have a friend who has a 300 wsm and 2 35wsm's and I finally talked him into trying just one brake. He loves it.I can even shoot that rifle ,many rounds and no soreness whatsoever.

As the other posters noted, a muzzle brake is an obvious improvement. You could also work with high B.C., relatively low weight bullets like Berger 168 and 185 Hybrids, over a relatively fast, bulky powder like N150 that will allow full pressure and ~100% case fill.. You should be able to get close to 3000 fps from 24 inches with 168 Hybrids and N150. Using a brake, that combo should be very tolerable.

I have been using very compressed loads of Reloader 19 and 22 for full house loads, no reason one could not just use enough to fill the case to the shoulder or a little more for less velocity. 150 grain projectiles would also help.

As the guys stated above, get a good break it will make all the difference in the world, I have a Savage Striker pistol in 300WSM that I wouldn't even shoot without the break. Even shooting 175gr SMK's close to 3000FPS it recoils straight back 2" and never leaves the rest.

I notice he said he has a 12" twist. In that case, the usual 190-210gn pills wont work anyways, so like others say, the 168 Hybrids should be great. My WSM light gun has a brake and shoots quite nice with the 168s, but starts to kick a bit with the 210s which it really shoots well. I am looking to switch back to 185s to cut back on recoil a bit.

Along with the 168s check out the 155s, you can get the Sierra Palmas or a few flavors of Berger in that range, they might drop the recoil down a tad and at 500yds the drift difference will be negligible.

I am definitely looking at having a brake installed. I may even have that done before I shoot it. I am also looking at some of the 168 and 175gr bullets. I think 168 at decent velocity should be fairly soft on the shooter and maybe will get a little better barrel life.

Thanks for the input,
Jeremy

In a recent post, another 300 WSM shooter was having difficulties with recoil. He mentioned using spring loaded butt plates and mercury recoil reducers. Maybe these might help if your range doesn't allow brakes?
