low noise 20 gauge rounds for rats?

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
Anyone know if a low report round could be loaded up so it doesn't sound like a full on shotgun. I realize this is off topic but we got flooded and the woods is under water so the field rats are in my yard up against my garage so I need suggestions. I think I have some .22 birdshot or snake shot and wonder if at 20 feet it would kill the little buggers. Thanks for all replays in advance.

A rat terrier will take care of business;)

Is it legal to discharge a firearm where you live? My dogs keep our property rat and groundhog free.

our place would flood when i was a kid and pop gave me a nickle a rat. i thought i was rich$$$

shorts work -they cost 51 cents a box back then.

if you have a smooth bore the cci shot will do fair at 20 ft and less. the crimped winchester rounds have a lot less shot in them.

Gamo pellet gun works great.....22 shorts in the right gun/barrel/bottle combination are similar in noise. You'll have to look up the bottle trick in Gyro's videos or some others on YouTube...been doing that for years, in a pinch.

A pellet gun is the best quiet choice. Trick is that the big box brands are just OK and the Scopes they use ar maybe useful-est 10%. CCI puts out a "Quiet" long case round that is about as loud as a "CB" cap if anyone is old enough to remember them. They are 6-700fps hollow points.

Since your header says low noise 20 ga... There are super low recoil , low noise win. AA shells Out there.. Got my last box at academy... Honestly they are not that low noise...

I would just get a decent pellet rifle or as others have stated the quiet cci .22 rounds...

22 CB rounds are quieter than any pellet gun that I have been around. In my experience, accuracy is not super, but acceptable when as in your case noise would be an issue.

Aguila makes some mini shotshells but only in 12 ga.

I can't find any others made by anyone searching online.

22 shot will work at that distance...at least, it did out of the smoothbore Remington 22 "shotgun" I have. Growing up I used it to kill rats in the barn because it would kill rats dead but not damage the metal siding other than scuffing the paint a bit.

For small game a rem 870 20g is all i use. Ive killed treerats rabbit duck geese deer quail with my 20 i use a full choke in mine with zero issues. And u can buy non toxic rounds but i dont bother.

Bucket traps ...

22 shorts are more fun. But damage/ricochet may call for a bb gun.
I sure wouldn't shoot 20 guage. In an old field 22 rifle I'd shoot the rat shot but it's not cheap per rat...

A scoped 22 caliber air rifle helped me out getting rid of the feral pigeon at my place and my parents place. Pretty sure it would help out with rats.

I had a problem with rats in my detached garage due to a large almond tree next to it, I used my pellet pistols and would hunt them in the tree at night.

Although, for catching large volumes a bucket trap is way more efficient. Uses a counter balanced tilting plank with bait on the end. Just be sure to put enough water in there to make them swim, 6-8" deep in a 5 gallon bucket works. Peanut butter and cheerios work great for bait.

I made a metro barrel for my 12 guage out of DOM tubing. with the subsonic trap loads you can hear the shot slap. If you have a 12 ga that takes the same chokes as my Stoeger uplander SxS, a tolerance for an extra 3' of barrel(yes feet) and $75 you'd part with shoot me a pm.
Choke interchange says Win Brno Moss style.

Maybe 10 years before Hastings offered a Metro barrel on of the Predator Hunting Mags had an article about making one out of conduit. Told where and how many holes to drill, it worked good. The big key to the Metro barrel i rill
