Lots to learn 270wsm

So I will be starting to load my first ammo 270wsm, my starting combination will be 140grain Berger classic Hunter, and Hodgons H4831sc. My rifle is a winchester 70 coyote with a 1:10 twist bull barrel. I bought this gun from cabelas miss marked for $350 6 years ago and really wanna get to shooting it more. I know all guns and barrels are different, to test different loads and find the most accurate is it better to stick with same powder and try different projectiles or vice-versa?

Great choice on the powder.. However the 140 Berger is not very dependent at very close range, like within 100 yards.

Even tho I have no personal experience with this cartridge and bullet/powder combo, I can PM you Quickload generated data that might give you a decent starting point if nobody else chimes in.

I'd appreciate that and definitely appreciate the input on Bullet choice due to it being a whitetail deer gun and messing around at the 500yrd range.

This might help you.

First Hand, REAL Experience, NOT some internet "Rumor",.. With, the 140 Classic Hunter, Bergers .270 WSM @ 3,173 FPS ave., velocity, I shot thru BOTH, Upper shoulders of, a Bull Elk at, 115 Yards ! Pow,. hooves, in Air !!
Found the Base of Bullet tangled in Hair, on opposite side, Very Little, shoulder Roast lost, insides,.. "Jello" !
2 years earlier, I Shot an Elk, in N. Arizona with, a 140 AccuBond @ 3,147 ave FPS, and watched him, trot around for, a couple of Minutes before dying, almost shot him, twice !
SOLD those, AccuBonds as, very small, "Mushroom" after, going thru, vitals and, One shoulder Blade,..
Pathetic results at only, 65 yards !

IF, H-4831 doesn't work for you, My load of, 65.7 grains of, IMR 7828, shoots real well, in my Tikka 24" SS, T-3 at Magazine, length COAL and, a F-215 Primer with, the 140 gr. Classic Hunter, Bullet ( Jumping, .105 to throat ).
Work up load, Carefully, in YOUR Rifle !
This load group's about, 3/4 MOA ( 1.5 inches at 200 yds, repeatedly ) and we've gotten, 3.5" to 6" group's out at, 700 Yards with this, Rifle & Load / combo. At 5,000 Ft Elev. its still going OVER, 2,000 FPS at, 800 Yards.
Enjoy your .270 WSM and,.. Good Luck !

We couldn’t get 7828 sc to shoot very well with 130 gr but we have a Winchester here in 270 wsm that tuned in almost identical to the savage 270 wsm.
Every animal we’ve shot with that caliber has not gone far at all, most were DRT .

@ JFrank,.. 7828 is a Slow burning Powder and BEST for, 140 and 150 grain, .270 WSM Bullets.
RL-26 and Retumbo are good Powders also,.. IF, you can find them.
YES, the .270 WSM is, a DRT "Killer" !
Good information. We didn’t get around to trying 140’s with that powder, SIL was quite pleased with the accuracy he got with his 4831sc , and I can’t fault him for that, the dang thing shoots really well.

If I may ask when you say jumping .105 to throat do you mean start at coal in the manual then start working towards the lands? I've been seeing the lock-n-load gauge take it to the lands and back off .020 I may be wrong with how I'm explaining.

Mine cloverleafs140 accubonds with magpro
Come to think of it, I have some LRT that could work too

@ dsweaver,..
I set my COAL about, .020 to .025, Short of, Tikka's Magazine length.
The Bullet ended up, "Jumping" .105 - .110 to, the Throat "Leade" ( Start of Rifling ) Tikka's have about, .200 total, Free bore.
The Magazine size, doesn't allow, the Bullet, to reach, the Lands.
The 140 gr. Classic Hunter, WAS Designed by Brian Litz, to shoot "Well", in Magazine fed Rifles.
Adjust, the Bullet / cart. length, ( COAL ) to Shoot "Best",.. in your Rifle.

I’m using Magpro with 140 gr Berger VLD in my .270 WSM, which is a Winchester Model 70. I also have had good luck with H4350 and regular LRP with 140 gr. Nosler BT’s.

How much neck tension with the 140’s?
