Looking to upgrade varmint gun.

OK, my 9 year old is growimg up to quick. I had just purchased a remington 700 220 swift and put some mid glass. Long story short he shot it yesterday for the first time and handled it very well, so time for an upgrade. I am lookong for a caliber to reach out. Any suggestions? Was looking into a 6.5 creedmoor, 700 wmg, 338 lap, not looking for thr usual varmint caliber

I'm a bit unclear. Are you looking to upgrade for you or your son? ............ Since there is no such thing as a 700wmg are you referring to REM. model 700 in 300 win mag? ..... how far do you mean by "reaching out", 1000+ yds. or something less?

Sorry. I did kind of mesh it all together. The 700 is my 220 swift. I need, or at least now have a reason, to upgrade for myself. Eventually would like to reach 1000 yards so i was looking into 6.5 creedmore, 300 win mag or 338. I have been leaning towards the 6.5, even then so many models. Just looking for some advice. Or thoughts to help me choose i have been reading that for the money the Savage in 6.5 is a fine rifle with the accu trigger.

Sounds like a 6.5 creedmoore will fit you fine.

Doesnt sound like you need a 338 lapua. A 338 lapua is like a big block racing engine, everything is expensive to make it work. 50 bmg ball ammo is cheaper to shoot vs buying 338 lapua ammo.

Which leads me to the next thing, if you are new to reloading, a 338 lapua is not for you either.

A 6mm or 6.5 caliber is way way way better to learn to shoot on and reload on. They will both do 1000 yards. Your post reads youve never shot that far anyways. So a big rifle is not what you want to learn on.

260
6.5x47 lapua if you reload
6.5 creedmoor

6BR if you reload
243

7mm-08
308

That all sounds like where you need to play.

Appreciate the advice. And i have noticed the 338 being expensive to buy set up and shoot. I have been leaning towards 6.5 but trying to avoid buyers remorse. I think i have looked into all models it a tough choice since all claim sub moa out the box

Buy one of the Savage's in 6.5 Creed and go tear up the 1000 yard target. My understanding is this is for Dad.
