Looking to build a custom 17hmr ( Need Opinions )

I am really in the mood to build my last custom rim fire hunter. In the past they were off Sako actions or the Ruger slip for barreled. I know that voodoo has an action I can build 1 off and I also see I can build 1 off a rims action 2. I want to use a Lija barrel as I have used many
With great results. I would like to know the pros and cons between these 2 actions and who would you recommend putting it together. Are they both a Remington foot print and will they drop In to a standard remington stock footprint for a 700 short action.

Ok give me a education.

I'll address the question of drop in a Remington SA stock by the Vudoo. I got a 17 HMR Vudoo from Vudoo with a Greyboe stock. And even getting that, it didn't look right. They took care of it for me and now I am very happy. But you will have something that looks worse than mine did.

Both the rail and ejection relief cut in the stock were wrong. The next issue you will run into is the bottom metal inlet. The standard BDL will not work with the Vudoo magazine system.

I had 2 Cooper LVT's in 17 HMR. I had a Anschutz 1717D HB in 17 HMR. And my CZ 455 with a Lilja barrel out shot all 3 of them. Both the Cooper and Annie magazines only held 4 rounds and were expensive an difficult to obtain. The Bergara and CZ hold 5 rounds and are inexpensive and much easier to obtain.

I think it takes a super special barrel to tame the crap coming CCI that’s labeled “17HMR”, enough that I would spend my money on three premium barrels and a reasonably priced action than one match action and one barrel. The only reason I call the CCI stuff crap and not a more severe insult is because the Winchester is so much worse.

I’ve probably shot a dozen mid to high end 17hmrs and only one (Anschutz 1727F w Hart barrel) seemed to be consistently very accurate. The rest were, well, inconsistent. It would be a shame to spend all of that effort and money to get mediocre results.

I contemplated converting my rimx from 22lr to 17. Decided to just hit the easy button and went with a 457.

Grabbed a trigger spring from a gentleman on here and a few other upgrades and it is a definitive shooter with the A17 ammo. I did hone things in with bolt shims.

Couldn't be happier.

First thing that I thought of, " Why would someone even want to build a custom 17HMR with the inconsistencies in ammo and the lack of anything approaching a match load? " By the way, please don`t take that as a knock at the OP, like it might sound. Absolutely, do what you wish! I enjoy shooting my Savage 93R17 but the CCI TNT ( HP ) load is the only thing that even comes close to consistency in grouping at 100 yards.

I totally understand where the OP is coming from but a custom 17HMR is going to be limited by the quality of the ammo that is available for it. I suspect that it will be nigh impossible to get better results from a custom build than from a stock Tikka T1x, CZ 457, or an Anschutz.
Personally I would buy one of the three that I mentioned and spend the money the custom will cost on ammo and shoot a lot.

Because you can and that's how alot of us think. To me the reason is no different than shooting the 22lr or any other caliber. They all have their own limitations. Join a 22lr league and you will spend countless hours trying to figure out how to be more competitive, with that caliber, in the class you chose to shoot in. Join a 17HMR league and you will think the same. I humbly shoot competition with both 22lr and 17HMR. Even though it's a little different thought process, I approach both the same with the same goal. I wouldn't underestimate the little 17HMR. Yes, it is a different animal, but it's a blast to shoot and try to improve on.
Good luck on your search dtucker.

Hornady 17 gr ammo and weigh sort them - put light stuff in one place heavy stuff in another and all the good stuff in the middle. Gets rid of most of the flyers. I love the hmr and the Mach 2 rounds for rimfire. Out of Annie’s tikkas cz’s all 450’s savages some with custom barrels and a couple contender barrels they all shoot pretty dang good for rimfire. Never even considered custom. I will throw this out there because it’s as far from custom as it gets ! An A17 in mach2 (semi auto) will shoot with the best in the list above !! It’s the rifle i grab when the shot matters especially if it’s something that moves but the tikka sits on the other corner ! Whatever went with the reloading of hmr ? Saw a few posts on it and nothing else ?

Going into a completely different direction - but did you consider doing a .17 Hornady Hornet or such? You can at least tune it to get it to shoot. The factory ammo shoots great if you want something that doesn't require reloading - but once you tune to a bullet - those things are pretty incredible - and you can even shoot the same Hornady bullets which shoot best in the HMR's. I've had some high-end .17 HMR's and they don't all shoot well - and you are stuck - unless you want to keep swapping barrels and such. If I had it to do all over again - I'd just go buy another Savage .17 HMR. Not many of those don't shoot well with Hornady ammo.
