Looking to build a 30 BR help needed

I'm in the mind frame of building a 30 BR for some local matches. I'm probably gonna use a BAT action and one question is with so many different models and such I'm unsure which to buy, I do know I want a RB LP RE but beyond that I'm lost. Next is barrels what twist barrel is optimum for the bullets used in the sport? I will most likely make this a switch barrel rig and with thoughts of shooting some IBS 600 yard matches s well. So any advice on which model action and barrel twist would be helpful. I've always had good luck with Shehanes stocks so I'll most likely go to Bill for the stock and scope.
Thanks in advance.

Bullet Weights and Profiles by Al Nyhus

30BRs work best with bullets not exceeding 125 grains. Jacket lengths should be either .925″ for the 110-112gr bullets or 1.00″ for the 118-125s. Ogives can be either 7 or 10 tangent ogives, but be aware that the shorter .925″ jackets require virtually no freebore length. The ‘zero freebore’ chambers can also be used with 1.00″ bullets. I currently use a .030″ freebore with the 1.00″-jacketed bullets and this works fine. Twist rates from 1:15 to 1:18 work well, with the edge going to the 1:17 and 1:18 versions at this point. A 1:15 twist rate allows use of the 125gr bullets built on 1.080″ jackets, but the freebore may be too long if you wish to change to the shorter 1.00″ bullets, especially if you prefer the 10-ogive models. I suggest setting your chamber and freebore up for the 1.00″-jacketed bullets, regardless of twist rate.

Hi James... One of the "things" you might consider is what action to use. I have a BAT action and they are one of, if not the finest actions on the market. However, there are other actions JUST as good for the intended purpose. One of these actions is a Pierce Action. They are BEAUTIFUL examples of a Remington "clone" >>however, infinitely better! They are also less expensive than a BAT and they have one specifically designed for smaller cartridges. This can save you $$$$'s for use maybe in a better scope etc... I love the "BR" line. I do not have a 30BR but I have a 6mmBR and am a big fan of the BR "family" of cartridges.. Just some food for thought...

Read the 30BR link on the main page and it will provide you with a lot of answers. I recently picked up a used 30BR that I had rebarreled and haven't shot it yet. I need to resize brass and get the necks down to size.
Finding custom bullets is a challenge right now. Good luck.

As usual the answer is "it depends".

Are you wanting to stay within NBRSA/IBS VFS and UBR custom class rules for the stock and weight on the 30 BR? You say "local matches", but don't mention the rules.

If it was me, I'd build a rifle within the NBRSA/IBS VFS rules. That way, if you want to sell it, you have a market rather than an orphan that you have to sell component by component.

So, that would be a 13.5 lb rifle with a HV contour barrel with a stock that has a forearm not wider than 3" and has 5 degrees of slope in the bottom of the buttstock.

You then come down to the choice of the scope. Your two basic choices are the Leupold LCS/March kind of weight and the Nightforce BR kind of weight. Either will work. Just have to be planned for.

Just talk to whoever is going to build the rifle and tell them what you want to do. I'd personally avoid the BAT SV. It's tiny and you don't need it for a 13.5 lb rifle. Maybe a DS.

Here is a quick laundry list:

1. BAT DS action RB/LP/RE
2. 17.5 or 18 twist HV or Max HV contour barrel. Pick your poison on the make. Talk to your gunsmith about it.
3. Whatever stock Bill recommends to make rules and weight. Maybe "Mini Tracker".
4. Leupold LCS 45 or Nightforce BR scope. Huge difference in weight. Must be planned for.
5. Jewel BR trigger.
6. Rings, mounts, butt plate and trigger guard.
7. Harrell's FL die that your smith recommends for your 30 BR chamber.
8. Seater die. I use Wilson inline dies cut with my chamber reamer. If you don't have one, you'll need an arbor press to use the inline die.
9. Hand priming tool. I have a K&M and like it a lot. Several other companies make them.
10. 30 BR brass made up already. Several people do this for you. I highly recommend starting that way.
11. H4198, Norma 200, VV N130, Reloader 7, Benchmark or 322. 4198 is most common.
12. Small rifle primers. CCI, Winchester, Federal. All work. Some better for different folks.
13. Bullets in the 110-118 grain range. Some folks have different experience, but for me, the lower number ogives have been more forgiving of my tuning incompetence. I saw on here yesterday EPS Bullets had some 30s for sale.

I don't know what you already have in terms of gear, but I'll add some stuff here in case:

1. Front rest. Lots of options. Two basic kinds are windage rests and joystick/coaxial rests. After shooting a joystick, I strongly prefer them. YMMV.
2. Rear bag. Lots of options and opinions. I suggest starting with something like the Edgewood Mini Gator or Protecktor. Mid ears with 3/8's gap between the ears. Leather, cordura, slick fabric, your choice. You might also look up the guy on benchrest central classifies that is selling bags with slick fabric sewn on.
3. You might need a couple-3 pillow bags for your elbow, shooting hand, joystick hand, etc.
4. You will need a towel or other bench top mat for your nice, expensive brass to eject on. I use a regular large bath towel but am making a "Billy Towel".

Whew! That's enough typing. Got to get to work.

You might give Ronnie Long a call @ 803-202-9409. He uses a lot of BAT actions & has built a number of winning VFS rifles including mine. Do it right the 1st time. Also, you might consider buying a nice used rig; that'll usually save you a lot of money & get you going much quicker. Good luck with it, Joe

Thanks for the responses guys to answer what class I wish I shoot it will be the UBR unlimited class this way the rifle I shoot I can change out the barrel and still make weight for 17# LG class for IBS 600 yard matches.
Best I can tell the choice barrel twist is 17 and 18 so I'm thinking a compromise of 17.5 should work or I hope it'll work. As for scope I'm fond of the NF so I will most likely use the 15-55 I hadn't seen or heard of anything bad of this scope (yet).

Joe thanks for the contact I'll give Ronnie a call and I will call Randy at BIB and pick his brain as well.

Now it's matter of gathering up an action and barrels and begin this project. I know it won't be completed this season but I do hope have it all ready for the 2014 season.

Thanks once again.

15-55 Nightforce.

Another alternative would be to skip the 30 BR and build, or pick up used, a 6 BR or one of the improved variants.

In UBR, you wouldn't be giving up anything to the 30 diameter and it might get you shooting this year.

That's one of the appeals of UBR. There is a place to shoot what you have. Danny had a stroke of genius when he understood that the central issue is getting people to the bench.

just wanted to second this, Pierce built my 6br on their rem action and Id put it next to a Bat anytime, it is absolutely on that level.

I have 30BRs on BAT MB and Pierce 700 clone actions. They shoot equally well. I would be hesitant to put my 32" straight 284 Shehane barrel on the 700 clone, though. The MB carries it well.
