Looking for some good 6mm Remington loads...

I am looking for some good loads to learn on for 6mm Remington. The barrel is 26" and has a 1 in 10" twist. It should be good for some 75-85 grain bullets. I really want some good hunting loads for coyotes and groundhogs out to 500 yards. Some nice paper punching loads would be nice too...something that might not carry the energy but will maintain the good line.

Any help is good, thanks,
F-C

Hunt up some H-4350 and a bunch of 80 grain Fowlers, or Bergers, and some federal 210 M primers and get to it.......

Any grain suggestions on powder? That's always the part that scares me.

I have some Sierra, Hornady and Speer bullets, I have wanted to look into Berger. Do they make anything that is good for hunting? I haven't looked at any of their products really...

If you are getting your loads from the internet, you SHOULD be scared.

Get a good loading manual, or go to:

For the Hodgdon loading manuals on line.

Oh heavens no!

I was just looking for some suggestions to work off of as well. I have the Speer Manual, the Lyman Manual, the Hornady manual, Modern Reloading as well as the Hodgdon manual as well...

I'd start w/ H4350. In my experience, it should provide good accuracy and load density. Your Hodgdon will be a good source of safe loading data.

F-C, I have worked with my .244, 1:12 factory twist, quite a bit and have had very good luck with H4895 with 60gr Sierra HPFB and 65gr V-Max bullets. Because of the factory chamber the bullets end up further from the rifling than I would like, but you can't change that. I would think that H4350 would also work well. I was talking to a fellow the other day who had won matches with a 6mm with 4831. In my mind it is a bit slow, but if the fellow won matches, you can't argue with success. Good luck, Peter.

I had outstanding accuracy many years ago with H-414, but I don't shoot ball powder anymore, so my current favorites for the 6mm Rem,.244) are H-4350 and H-4831sc

Favorite bullets for woodchucks are the 75 and 87 V-Maxs. Makes a big "whump" with a high splatage factor.

CatShooter, I agree that it is hard to beat the V-Max's and both powders that you mentioned. I also have had good luck with H4895 although it may be a speck fast. If you have not tried the 60gr Sierra's HPFB's, I would suggest it. They work really well although probably no better than the V-Max's. If it peaks your interest PM me. Take care, Peter.

Pintopete...

I have two 6mm Rems, and they are both set up for long range woodchucks - that is, from 400yds on out.

The little 60gr hollow points are useless at those ranges, as velocity falls off too fast.

I use a 6mmBR,among others) for closer ranges - 65gr V-Maxs.

CatShooter, My .244 is an old 1955 Remington 722. All factory. Certainly not a 400 yard rifle, but sure shoots well at 100 yards. I have another location where 350 yards is possible but I have not tried it yet. I have experienced that, with my sporter weight barrel, a little too much heat throws it all out of whack. Take care, Peter.
