looking for some facts on 40xBR

hi everyone!

I've been looking at a 40xBR and doing some research and it seems there is a lot of different information out there as to what's what.

are these actions square and true or are they just as bad as standard rems?

did they all come out originally with the lyman scope? and were they drilled and taped for standard bases aswell?

does anyone make a very good replica of the original timber stocks?

The 40x and later xbr have been around a long time. they are the cream of the crop for "factory actions" and will not leave the factory unless the meet strict group size. the group fired is included in the box with the rifle.

that said, they can be improved by "truing" done by a competent good smith. all that i have had have shot under .250 to start with and a few under .200 when trued they are as good as most can hold and load for.

with trigger and bedding done as competently as a "custom"action, the 40x is very competetive.

All I know is that I like the 40XB Rangemaster Thumbhole so well that I have the eighth one on order (with another two with the "standard" stock and one with a Fagen thumbhole stock.)

If you will google 40xbr it should pull up the info you are looking for, I done it awhile back and found some history, But for the life of me i can't remember the site.

Thanks T 700

Just "inherited" a 40XB from my good friend and gunsmith who is no longer with us :-[
It's been trued by a BR gunsmith and the bolt fluted (only for effect).

It comes with a basic BR stock and it's going to become a 6BR Norma for longer range pest busting. I'm hoping for stellar accuracy. Won't be built as heavy as my current 6.5x47- maybe a 26" med/heavy bbl as I want slightly better portability

There is a lot of info on the various 40x variations. But to try and narrow it down a bit and just talk about the 40XBR that is laser etched and came with the wood stock. I believe this is the one you are talking about.
They were drilled and tapped for standard scope bases on the receive and on the barrel so something like a Unertl could be mounted.
As to weather or not these actions were trued to any higher degree of accuracy than a standard model 700 is debatable. I believe they are better than the average 700 but they still are not as good as a modern custom action like those used on today's competitive actions.
I love these rifles and have several but if I want to go out and compete in a BR match I will take my Stolle.
The stock on these rifles is cut short. 13" or so. They really fit nice and ride the bags well. I don't know of anyone who makes a duplicate of these stocks. They are kind of in between a varmint and BR stock. If you ever see one of these stocks for sale they don't last long. I know I pick one up any chance I get.
Here is one in 6x47:

Would be interesting to see the price of the 40X here as you can get a brand new pierce action for around $1200 from memory. True, fluted bolt, square recoil lug and pin for it. Takes any rem style trigger and 20MOA bases available. I just went this way and very happy with it. Just waiting on reamer to arrive and it can go together. 30 inch maddco 1.25" straight 6.5mm, redback precision aluminium barrel block and custom laminate stock to be sprayed with metallic 2 pack (colour to be decided), 30mm kelbly polished rings and a 8-32x56 SIII with target dot and 1/8 clicks, pierce action and basix trigger set around 600grams.

yep from what ive read that is basically the conclusion i have come to. is the exact measurement 13" from the trigger to butt plate or is that an educated a guess? i f they were quite short i may be able to trim the extention off and take it abck to original.

beautiful rifle! is yours an original 6x47 based or the .222 case or has it been rebarreled to 6-6.5x47lapua?

i have other custom rifles/actions and do know the benifits but for about 1/6th the price it might be a bit of fun to play with a piece of history and then pass it on ;D

AusFclass,
I can measure the exact LOP if you need it.
The point with these rifles is not money or ultimate accuracy. As you said they are a piece of history and I just like them. Any changes from the original as they came just makes them another shooter albeit a very excellent shooter. They are an example of a company trying to build a competitive BR rifle.
I have two of the 6x47's as they were built by Remington on the 222 magnum. Mike Walker at the time believed these were the best BR caliber around. My first BR rifle built by Hart was a 6x47. Wish I had it back.
The 6x47 also makes a great varmint rifle. Federal did make some brass for the case but some good Herter's brass in 222 mag also makes up some good cases.
