Looking for recommendations, low cost .223 55gr 100 yard target bullets

I am looking for a real cost effective 100 yard plinking bullet. Sure I would like great accuracy and only pay pennies a bullet. What is my best overall bullet recommendation with cost being the priority?

I am shooting from two rifles:

one is an AR-15 18" .223 wylde 1/8 twist
and the other is a bolt action 24" 1/9 twist 5.56/.223

Check out Widener's or Midsouth. You'll probably need to buy 5000 to get to your price point.

The Hornady 55 FMJBT's in the link shown above by hogpatrol are a very good choice for your application, IMHO. I've shot several thousand of these through a few different AR's. Not quite "match" quality, but great for what they are.

It has been a looooooog time ago but I got a bunch of 55 gr FMJ bullets made by IMI from Wideners really cheap that were just as accurate as Sierra Match King 69 gr from my Bushmaster AR out to 200 yards. Never shot over 200 yards with them though. You never know how accurate a bullet will be in your rifle until you actually work up loads with them though. I was lucky in the fact that I live close to Wideners and they used to have a walk in store where you could go and pick up what you wanted in smaller amounts. I got just a few bullets and tried them and then went back and bought all I could afford. They don't have this walk in store any more. >:(

I have had good results with the 55 grain hp from mid south. They are the varmint nightmare and are my go to bullet for the majority of my prairie dog trips.

This^^^^

I just ordered a box myself after seeing this thread ;D

I initially made the mistake of ordering the 6,000 count box of the Hormady SP, which is a flat base bullet. My buddy had the item above, which is basically same bullet but fmj and has a boat tail.

I will tell you this, when loading several hundred at one sitting on my Dillon 550B, these boat tails are much faster to load. That's why I bought them this time around.

I used by buddies bt and they shot identically to the sp flat base I had bought. With H335 and this bullet, I'm cranking out very high quality and affordable plinking ammo that is about 1.25-1.5 MOA. Which is fine for my intended usage, a 16" Barnes Precision with EOtech.

Your title says low cost and target bullet...I've found that those two adjectives to be mutually exclusive. However in your post you say plinking, so you appear to be after a plinking bullet that will shoot fairly accurate at targets and not cost an arm and a leg.

I've never found a FMJ bullet that qualified although I'm sure some do. The Midsouth bullets will shoot okay and are certainly good for varmints and plinking, but I wouldn't count on small groups.

The least expensive .224 bullet I've found that will produce near target grade groups is the Hornady Z-max bullets. Cabelas often has them on sale for about $60 per 500. My last order coincided with $5 shipping. However...they are 50 grain bullets, not 55. That is my recommendation.

Thanks for all those suggestions. Looks like .13 cents / round is the best you can do for this application. For about .04 cents more there is the A-max in 52GR or the hornady 52gr match bthp, also the v-max 55gr. I have hear good accuracy claims for the a-max. $4 additional per 100 isnt too bad.

These all look good on paper. (No pun)

Z-max V-max A-max what is the difference between these bullets when you not hunting but Target shooting? In terms of 100 - 200yd accuracy.

I asked Hornady about the Zmax Vmax difference. Was told they were the same, just different color tips.

A couple of years back, I switched my 223 over to the midway dog town bullets in 55 gr from my normal Sierra 52 gr bthp. To my surprise, they shot just as good! They did prefer a different load recipe. My 52's like RL 10X and the 55 dog towns like a full case of varget. I was shocked and glad that these bullets fly straight at a super cheap price point. I bought in bulk at 53$/ 500. The price is surely a little higher by now.

Do you want "plinking" rounds or precision rounds? Get on all the suppliers email lists and sign up for notification and wait for your sweet bullet. If you want cheep bullets then go for the unlabeled projectiles.

$0.103 per. Probably the cheapest you can find that's not a military-style FMJ. The 500 count is out of stock but same price per bullet.

I have no experience how they shoot.
