Looking for places to Prairie Dog Hunt

Hows it going fellas.

Two buddies and I are looking to do a prairie dog hunt this summer. Does anyone have any ranches? We would throw the owner a couple bucks to shoot for the day. Does any one in that area know of anyone that need some varmint control?

Any help would be awesome. There are $350 a day guided hunts, but that's not what we are looking for.

If you have land you wouldn't mind being hunting, or know anyone, please PM me.

Thank you,

Bryson

Bryson, there are the "Grasslands", in the north-central portion of the Texas Panhandle, which are open to the public.. I would call the local Game Warden's office in the area to find out EXACTLY where public land is.. You do not want to inadvertently wander on to private land while hunting in Texas>>>that is a HUGE mistake.. The Prairie Dogs were decimated several years ago by the Bubonic Plague>> I do not know if they have recovered up there or not. But a simple phone call can get you all you need..

Awesome info, thanks!

Do you think $500 for 2 days is a fair trespass fee to pay?

I can not honestly say... I get to beat the Prairie Dogs up for free.. But the landowner is not from Texas, nor does he reside in Texas. I know the ranch foreman and I have a great rapport with him and his family. Although I don't know how much longer that will hold out as he is an employee and not the owner. The previous owner was the Constable of that County>>>He has retired, sold his ranch and headed off into the sunset.. That's why I do not know and can't answer your question..

Place me in a dogtown and my old bones and all my worries go away.

I THINK YOU MAY HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING A PRIVATE RANCH TO HUNT. SHOOTERS THAT FIND A PLACE TO SHOOT AND HAVE GOOD LUCK ARE NOT GOING TO FREELY GIVE OUT THAT INFORMATION. YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE HUNTING GROUNDS TALK TO THE LOCALS. GO TO THE CAFE IN THE MORNING AND LUNCH TALK TO THE LOCAL POPULATION.

Forget SD, many/some/all ranchers are traveling to NE for poison (not allowed for sale in SD) to kill off the PDs on their land(s). DAMHIK.

Its not that the information is some big secret, its that it doesn't matter, the really good ones will be booked 1-3 years in advance and its more or less invitation only not first come first served on private land.

My mother moved out to SD near Hot Springs, I asked if she could ask around if the locals knew of any places. I went out there a couple of months later for a week on 2 different ranches stocked with prairie dogs. One of the places she literally just went to there house and asked permission. The owner was more than happy to allow us to blast and even came out to talk with us a few times. Just be polite and follow there rules! IE don't shoot their cattle.

Southwest Colorado has a bunch of them and most land owners would be happy to have you and no trespass fee.just stop and ask. I shoot on 150 acres that is close to my house with no lack of dogs. I take at least 2 guns one to shoot while the others barrel is cooling.

I dont know about you but I refuse to pay a fee to do animal control damage for the Rancher. Since I grew up right in the hart of Doggin it was nothing to take my 22lr onto the school bus and stay at my firends house and shoot all the dogs we wanted after the chores where done. Ijust cant force myself to do it at this point anyway.( Pay Hunt)
I guess Im lucky in away. I know how to interact with the local Farmers and Ranchers ussually talking about Weather, Crops, Fuel/seed prices before ANY hunting comes up in a conversation. Being a Land owner and knowing what its like to have people you dont know tramping through your farm is a little unsettling at times. Kinda like if I came to your house and asked to sit in your back yard for a couple of days. Would you do that?
Having connections certainly pays off.

Vervi said it best, Be polite and dont shoot there COWS or Machinery. Close the gates.

a trespass fee also helps with any legal issues should an accident happen. Smart protection on the owners part.
