hi everyone. i'm new on this site & i sure i'll enjoy it. i'm looking for a way to mount a scope on my win. mod. 52d. it has the orig. redfield sights on it now. my problem is that the mount lugs are so far apart that i can't find anything to fit. any & all help would be great. thanks again & i'll be enjoying the forum. michaelp. oh! i almost forgot, i'm a old fart in florida.

Without a picture we can only guess at what you're up against, but it sounds like you have a 52D with scope blocks on it, a fairly common setup. If that is the case, the center to center spacing is probably on the order of 7.25 inches and the rifle is set up to take a Unertl, or Lyman SuperTargetspot (or a Fecker if you want to go even rarer), in the old style, with external adjustments built into the rings. If this is the case your choices are limited and expensive - external adjustment Unertls and Lymans are pretty dear these days, priced on either side of this one (http://www.opticsplanet.com/leatherwood-8x-usmc-sniper-scope-w-external-adjustments.html), the Leatherwood 8X Wm. Malcom modern reproduction of the old Marine Corps Unertl sniper scope used from WWII through Viet Nam. If you do not wish to stay with this system (assuming this is what you have), you will have to have the rifle drilled and tapped for more modern bases and rings.

I have one of each of the above named brands (the Lyman is 25x and came on a 52) and the Fecker is on a sweet little falling block single shot that is worth a good deal less than the scope). They make a fun retro setup, but they are, by today's standards, finicky and can be annoying, at least until you get used to them; for instance, you generally install the scope on the mounting blocks before a shooting/hunting, session and remove it when you are done, storing it in a suitable box or soft case - the rectangular soft cases made for storing shorter barreled AR uppers work well.

Don't know if Ken Viani is making a mount yet or will make anymore. If you are wanting a mount to use a modern day internal adjustment scope on his are about the most solid. They will fit the C and D models. You will either have to email him or post on Rimfirecentral to find out. They were $100. I have a new one I bought in case I wished to use something other than a Unertl/Lyman tube type scope with but haven't shot it with either yet.lol Talk of a couple of other gents coming up with a mount but I haven't seen anything yet.

EGW and Viani both makes modern mounts with Weaver / Picatinny rails. I use both on my 52D's. Viani does indeed still make the 52D models and the last one I bought was 110.00.

The Viani mount is great........screws right on, and no drilling or modification needed to that classic rifle. :)

The Viani is a very good mount, very solid, but $110. The EGW. Is a cantilever mount that bolts to just the holes of the first barrel block $35.00. I own both, both work well, but the Viani is much more solid. A winchester 52 is worth the $ IMO.

I just don't understand the lack of love for the EGW mount. Is it because it is a commercially produced item and the Vianni is built in someones garage and is a labor of love. For me the EGW is sleek and functional. The Vianni looks clunky and does nothing for the looks of the rifle. If someone has run an accuracy test that shows an advantage either way I would like to see it. John

+1 on the EGW as well. I have both, and both work well. The EGW is solid enough with two screws for a RF rifle without the recoil. I carry a Weaver T24 and T36 on mine with no issues at all. The Viani mount is scarce as Ken doesn't turn them out like he used to I heard. BUT they are indeed rock solid mounts. I have two EGW's and 1 Viani on three rifles. ALL of them work very well, so go with what you like and can afford for now. Remembering that the Viani mount at $110.00 or so for now is just the low side of what they will cost someday in the future.
