Looking for help with a stock?

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
I have a benchrest stock and I discovered why it is so light. The butt is empty and was wondering if there is a 2 part foam to mix and pour in to add some rigidity. I don't want to add a lot of weight as that can be an issue. Great foam will not work as it is too a confined space to ever completely dry.

Just Google 2 part foam mix. Quite a few companies making this stuff.

Back when i was painting stocks i would foam them as well. One thing i can tell you is you cant stop that foam. It will expand and come out of pinholes you didnt know you had. It gets hot and is very nasty and dont come off of anything. Pretty funny to watch somebody else do it.

Perhaps just a WAG, but I would think (from an engineering standpoint) the only way to increase the rigidity of a hollow buttstock is to increase it's wall thickness by adding more (rigid) material (to the wall). Just filling the interior with a less rigid/lesser density/strength material will not help.

Am curious - what exactly is the nature of its low rigidity? Too much flex or ? More info could help in offering a solution.

I have to add some weight with a weight system I want to install and if it is 16# structural foam it would work easy. The only problem is it gets hot and I don't know how hot it gets but I will call the company that sells it and find out.

I had the same issue with an MPI blank - the butt stock walls needed a plug to maintain the shape plus I wanted a base that I screw a recoil pad to - I fitted a balsa wood plug that was forced-fit and then with the stock in a vise with the butt end up, poured a fiberglass resin layer about 3/8 thick on top - when cured the stock walls were more rigid and I had a sturdy base to attach my recoil pad to.

Go to fiberglast and look at their 2 part epoxy dough. It is light and extremely hard. Used it to fill in MBR stock as to add some lead shot for weight and cheek piece hardware.
