Looking for help on buying a gun to build up for competitions

Hello,

I am a bit new to competition shooting and I have a lot to learn.

I have been doing some research and found many great guns, but for some reason I always come back to the savage 6.5 creedmoor rifle Model: 12 Long Range Precision 26" barrel. $900

I was thinking of getting this scope - Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP due to them being a lot like a leupold scope, but much more affordable. I can get the scope for about $750.

Do these sounds like good choices to build off of, if not why and what should I get or choose better?

If you think these are good choices what other good affordable parts can I add to these to help me?

Thanks for your time.

I have this vortex on my one of my f classers and it is top notch. I also have a few savages that shoot better than 1/2 minute off the shelf. With this combo I think you can go a long way. Welcome to the game

The rifle and scope combination will get you into the "F Open" class shooting. Palma is another story since palma shooting is done with "Iron" sights and limited by caliber. I suggest if "F" class competition is your goal I'd go with either the 6.5/284 for F open or 308 for FTR

I would also looking into the Sightron 8-32 or 10-50 for glass its the same price as the Vortex Viper PST. But more magnification and bigger objective lens for more light gathering.

Yup, if going to Taget shoot, get a target scope.. Sightron is a great bang for the buck...

Great thanks everyone for the responses. I am going to take a look at that scope, I researched it a little and it seems like something I am looking for. How are the quality of those scopes compared to others?

Have a good night.

If you want to shoot both F-Class and Palma, may I reconmend the Savage Palma rifle. The beautiful thing about the 308 ( and of course if your daring, the 223) is theat it can be used for many disciplines. Any/Any, Palma, Match Rifle, F/TR, F-Open. The Savage Palma rifle can be had at good price of one takes the time to shop around. There is not much you will have to do to it to get it ready for competition. Add a scope rail. Buy some iron sights, aa hand stop for when shooting sling. Use a Sinclair bi-pod and the scope and shoot either division of F-Class that you dire to shoot. It is very good way to get started. After you have begun there, get your piggy bank in the super large size, fore you will in time want a something like a Barnard action!

I"m with Froggy on the Savage Palma. But, in my opinion, you can not go wrong with any of the Savage rifles. I have a Model 10 in .308 and a Model 12 in .223 that I shoot in F-TR in could not be more pleased with their out of the box accuracy. Also, you might look in to the Millet LRS. You can usually pick one up in the $450 range, and mine have been very reliable and super clear, and with 140 minutes of adjustment, have the most of any scope I've found on the market.

I shoot 1000 yd benchrest competitions. I won a Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP, like you mentioned, in August at the Northwest 1000 yd. Benchrest Championships. I would be willing to let it go cheap if you need it. It is still new in the box. Make an offer.

Weaver T-24 runs about $350 new and is an excellent scope. As others said, get a target scope and the Weaver T-24/36 or Sightrons are great choices. At a higher price point, the NF is the gold standard: a 8-32 BR model will run you about $1100. I don't shoot a Savage, but would certainly recommend that as an easy way to get a good gun fast. Get a 308WIN Palma gun and you will also be able to use it for F-TR.
