Looking for a starter 9mm load using Win 452AA

Since components are scarce, I would like to work-up a practice/plinking/target load for my 9mm with what I have on hand. I want to use 115gr Xtreme plated bullets with Winchester's discontinued 452AA powder & CCI SPP. I've found a number of older references where shooters say this powder works great in 9mm, .38's & .45's. I've even found a few specific loads for the .38 & .45 but nothing for the 9mm. I'm hoping someone has some old load data or experience with 452AA in the 9mm. I just need a min-load & I'll work up from there.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I used up 12# of 452AA in 32SWL, 38Spl and 45.

I kind of doubt you can go too light to be dangerous. In 32, I think I was loading something like 1.1 to 1.3gn.

In 45 (200gn cast), 3.xgn yielded a very light target load (sub-700fps.) I think I loaded up to about 4.5 grains when I was shooting steel. [caveat: this is all from memory - verify first]

That said, rumor has it that it was very close to either 231 or WST, depending on who you talk to.

Odd that so little 9mm data exists. I did find this from an old Calguns post (sounds a little on the warm side to me):

Speer manual #11 has a little data:
9MM--452AA--124gr TMJ--start 4.9-1064 fps---maximum 5.4-1142fps
- the only load listed in 9MM with any bullet weight

Good luck!

WST also isn't recommended for 9MM but I had luck with 4 grains of it under Hornady 124 grain bullets. I would not start at 4.9 grains if I were you. I started at 3.5 grains with the WST. Also, watch how deep you seat the bullet as pressure builds fast in a short 9mm case. Seat the bullets on the longish side of what will pass the drop test in the chamber of your pistol.

From what I have read, 452AA is the same as Trap 100, or maybe a better way to say it is Trap 100 replaced 452AA. That said, my Hodgdon #25 manual list 115gr jacketed Trap 100 min 4.8 grs, 1049 fps, 22,600 cup - Max 5.2 grs, 1121fps, 25,700 cup.

Although I have never had a "Prediction Load" (usually with Midwest "relatively unknown" powders) blow up, I have always been mindful of the possibility. Start low (charge weight) and long on the Oal and shoot in the heaviest frame shortest barrel pistol you have "just in case" so you are OK if you do "blow a case."

Working and stopping as primers start deforming has always worked for me. Also consider using fresh cases for first or heavy loads.

I do not understand why they brought out AA+ so similar to WST; WSL did not stick, either.

I tried AA+ in 12 gauge and did not think it was any better than, if as good as the 700X I have used most of the time (Except when 452AA was new and less expensive.) So I shot it up in .38 Spl. Lacking printed data, I just put it in my CH Autochamp and took the same VOLUME as I was using 231 for wadcutters and semiwadcutters. Charge weight was lower, velocity about the same. I did not worry about pressures, it was all shot in Magnum guns and if it had come out +P would not have been a problem.

I am now loading .45ACP with 452AA bought from a local trapshooter's estate. It is marked as opened in 1981. I could not find pistol data for it, so I posted here and there on the www. Phil Hogdon came back and said that their Trap 100 was the same as 452AA, supplied to them by WW, and sent me copies out of an old manual. That is very good service, and I will support them by using Hodgdon powders wherever suitable. HS6 in 9mm, H414 in .22-250, and H322 in light load .30-06 and light bullet .223, currently.

I have Hogdon manual #26 dated 1993.
