looking for a smith to turn down large shank barrel

grouse

Silver $$ Contributor
See the attached pic. PIc on right is a large shank barrel with a step up, which is what I have. Pic on left is a standard shank. I need the step turned down and the barrel threaded for a small shank.

Anyone willing to take this on? Thanks

You realize that this is gonna cost almost as much as a standard chambering job ? Still have to set it up and indicate it in, which may be more difficult depending on the quality of the existing chamber or condition of the throat.
MAy be cheaper to sell and buy what you want.
ThAt said I could take care of that for you
Pm me the details on the barrel

The barrel is already chambered.
It doesn't matter . It's usually harder to indicate a used commercial barrel or for that fact a new factory barrel due to the tolerances allowed by the factory . I would much rather start fresh but it's your money , expect to pay for a complete job that may or may not be as good as a factory original . Lots of reasons shy I say that , large throats , offset throats necks , size of orig barrel , egg shaped chamber , you get the idea .
Sell what you have and buy what you want .

Its not the cutting the chamber that takes time, its the setup/indicating that takes the longest. IN fact I say out of the indicating, threading, pre boring, and chambering, the chambering is probably the fastest part of all that.

Methinks this isn't a benchrest competition rifle so I wouldn't overthink it.

Honestly, I'd stick the muzzle end of the barrel in the 6-jaw Buck, live center in the chamber (only two tenths runout), turn down the shank, pick up what remains of the threads and re-cut them. I don't see that working "off" the existing chamber, assuming it's correctly cut and within reasonable tolerances of concentricity (no reason to assume there's a problem) is a concern to me.

And yeah...some of us still work between centers with fine results at the target

Just turn and thread as mentioned in the last two posts, it will be fine. One hour at the very most and it’s back in the box on its way back to you.

Dual thread Lrg/Sm shank Savage. Not difficult to do just different. Hard for non-Savage guys to digest though. Lol

I sent you a PM. I can do this for you.
