Looking at reloading

Hi guys,

Ive been shooting for two years now, working hard on precision shooting from 100-300 yards. I have a savage FP-SR in .223 that I love. The best ammo ive found for my rifle has been Black Hills Red Box 69grain Match ammo. Its roughly $1 per bullet. Is it conceivable to load bullets that are as accurate or more and cheaper (dont include my time)?

What scares me about reloading is that i see people spending months and months and months trying loads to find the best one. I want to reload but dont really want to spend all that R&D time.

Ok now im ready for your flames .....

been there. find somebody who reloads and ask if you could observe the process. most of us would do this without hesitation since we enjoy this pastime and are usually generous and sharing people. join a gun club and go as often as you can and you will meet shooters who reload and will probably take you to their reloading haven. check with gun stores that sell reloading stuff and ask about reloading classes...some offer these free or at min cost and they will really give you a hands on experience since they want you to start and buy from them. since you have shown interest my bet is that you will get into reloading and maybe "handloading"...where obsessive compulsive behavior abounds! i can't stand paying $1.00 a shot to see bullet holes that look like a .410 pattern. i can handload for 50 cents or less and see holes that overlap. good luck.

Reloading isn`t that hrad. If you have a load that shoots well, duplapicate it. Use one of them to set seating depth. Get the same bullet and load to the same velocity and you should be real close. If your paying $ 1 / round it shouldn`t take a long time to pay for your press. I do agree, if you can find someone that has been reloading for a while to help you get started DO IT.

one thing that you might not be considering is that you really might find that you enjoy reloading once you see the huge changes you can effect on a target with micro changes on the reloading bench. For many of us its not that it takes months to find a good load, but the search for something better can be a fun pursuit. On the other hand you might hate it but my first rifle ever was a wildcat and I cant see the point in shooting factory ammo at all, half the fun of shooting for me was always shooting ammunition that I made, that worked really well in a given gun. Try it you might find it enjoyably addicting ;)
