Looking at new long range rifle - Tactical Operations Inc - GA Precision

I know this has been discussed, but I am looking for someone here that may have experience with either tac/ops Inc, or GA Precision.
I'm looking for a good 300 WM tactical rifle to go along with my other toys ( Remington 700 PSS in .308 and S/W AR 10 6.5). Both of these guns shoot fine, only last weekend the Remington 700 shot sub min at 600 yards. I just want to see what can be done with an upscale platform in 300 WM.
From what I understand the Tac/Ops is simply a stock Remington action ( 40X I suppose), with first class barrel, placed in a Mcmillan or Manners stock. Nothing seems to be all that proprietary as they even use a stock ( tuned) trigger. I've heard nothing but good about them, not sure of the wait time or cost (5K?) as I cannot yet get a call back from them.
GA Precision, I can't get a call back from them either, but I'd also suppose they are busy building rifles. These guns seem to be a true custom gun, even the receiver is custom. Heard nothing but good about them as well.
The other choice would be to obtain an older or new 40X receiver, and have built a custom gun in 300 WM. I'm sure that a decent gun could be built for under 5K going this route.

Curious if any of you other shooters have had the same concerns and questions and further curious what route you wound up going. There may well be other manufactures out there that I've not heard of as well. Feel free to chime in with any and all info, and lessons learned.

Just my opinion:
On cartridge: Go 300WSM. Do some research on it against the 300 Win Mag.
Buy a Manners stock of your choice, a nice custom action, Krieger barrel, Jewell trigger and send it all to Bob Green to put together. You’ll wind up with a fantastic shooter for under $4k.
Or:
Contact Cigarcop on this forum and talk to him about what you want.

GA Precision is top notch. There are plenty of others. Two other people I would recommend are Marc Soulie at Spartan https://spartanrifles.com/ or Ryan Pierce at http://www.piercisionrifles.com/about-us/ Marc and Ryan may not answer but they will call you back.

Cartridge is so much a matter of choice and application IMO its tough to comment on. Unless I needed a lot of retained energy at long range, I would pass on a 30-cal and go with a 6mm, 6.5 or maybe 7mm.

I'm starting to think along the same lines. Remington custom shop can build the rifle I'm interested in: 40xs, 300 WM, hart barrel, mcmillian A3, with mag well. 6 months for 5 k. Of note, Remington is the only one of the three so far that has called me back with a price and time line. I originally called them to see if I could get just an action, and or barreled action, but no dice.

Good point. I'm having good luck with the 6.5 cm in the S/W AR10. Not shot it out past 800 yards, but sure "dings" the steel men at that range! Just I've always had a hard on for a 300...

No offense intended, but your asking about some old calibers made by old operations. There are lots of better calibers and lots of great gunsmiths nowadays. Combine that with new actions and new manufacturers and new scopes and you could have a rifle that will shoot circles around a TacOps WinMag at 1/2 the price.

Good luck!

Thank for your view. I'd be interested in what new calipers you have in mind. I doubt that the 300 WM is ready for the 45/110 pile. I do have a 6.5 creedmoor as well. Is that out of date too? :)

If I was getting 5k for a rifle, I’d call you back........fast!:D

No, but you wont get much love here AccurateShooter for it ;)

We just want to save you money and point you in the right direction. If you want smith recommendations I'm sure we could come up with a bunch! Decide what you want this new rifle to do (Paper/Steel/ELR/Hunt) and the people around here will point in the right direction. Hell if you want a 7SAUM, of of my buddies just posted his for sale, and he's damn near giving it away....

Always looking to gain info, but I think if the 300 WM was good enough for Chris kyle it's probably ok for me too

I think selection of a round, rifle design, etc and a builder depends upon what you define as long range and what kind of targets/competition you intend to shoot. Long range bench rest, fclass, prs, casual shooting all require different attributes.

I have experience shooting several GA Precision full custom builds including one in 300 win mag. All have been exceptional performers, very smooth, very accurate , and exhibit excellent fit and finish. The 300 win is built on a Manners T-6 full carbon layup. It shoots custom loads consistently sub 1/2 and regularly shoots premium factory loads it likes into 1/2 minute. The 300 win mag cartridge is a viable contender at long range and rings our 1035 yard gong with authority using the 230g Bergers. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Good info! Decided on GA precision right after a phone call from them today. Seems like a 1st class operation.

I believe that your not understanding what people are trying to tell you. You can get a great shooting rifle (very possibly better shooting) from a good smith, for less money than GA is going to charge you.

I understand that people have various views. I also fully understand people like to pass those views along for consideration. I'm comfortable with my decision this far. The price is not all that high for a custom rifle in my view. Thanks
