Longest Shot with a 17 Remington?

What's your longest shot you have made on a prairie dog with a 17 Remington? Someone tried to tell me that cartridge wasn't for anything over 250 yards. Certainly proved that wrong many times over!

Hard to believe but once I found a good load for my 17 rem. my furthest shot was a lazered 538 yards. with a 25 grain v-max. I will add there was no wind and it took two shots to get the little bugger. ;D I had a load that had an average speed of 4165 FPS. I was perty proud of that rifle and when the throat went I changed it over to what it is now...my new 20 Practical. I find the 20 calibers to be less fussy than the .17's but would get a lot of argument over that statement. ;D

Well not prairie dogs but rock chucks. A friend and myself shot a few at 307-321 yards earlier this year. It's certainly good for a lot farther. My buddy had so much fun with it he's building one for himself.

There's a lot of disinformation about the 17 Rem. All of it from idiots that have never spent any time with one. If you run the ballistics of a 17 Rem with a 25 V Max at 4100 and a 22-250 with a 55 V Max at 3700, the 17 shoots flatter and to 600 yards has within 1/2" of the same wind drift. But I'm preachin' to choir here I know. :)

I was shooting a mid range f class match at the Rattlesnake range here in eastern WA a few years ago and one of the regulars uncased a shiny new 204, he proceeded to clean the 300 yd target, but when we moved back to 600,he had a hard time keeping it on paper, much less in the scoring rings. It was blowing as usual, 10 - 15 out of the west/northwest. As I recall, he was using the lightest bullet/highest speed combination for a load. Before any body starts on about his skills, he routinely shoots expert/master level scores. I'm sure the high speed light bullets can be used accurately, I also believe folks should look out the window before deciding which rifle to run. Well, that's my opinion, YMMV.

450 yds. into the heart of a broadside adult coyote - stone dead
300 yds. precision shot behind the ear of a red fox that was sleeping curled up on a knoll 20 inches from his hole.
Rilfe is a CZ527 Kevlar varmint NF NXS 8-32 handloaded with Berger 25gr @ 4050 fps

416 yards on a groundhog. I have a ballistic chart that I dialed in holdover. Aimed for the head and that's where I hit him. Numerous one shot kills from 300 to 375 yards. Remington BDL spotter with imr 4895 and 25 gr Hornady HP

Those are some great shots! it's really an amazing, accurate cartridge and I have shot numerous prairie dogs with mine. Enough to be on the second barrel. There was another thread asking what the most under rated cartridge is. I believe the 17 Remington would be in the running for the title. My longest shot was on an absolutely dead calm day. All the close dogs were gone and there was one at 517 yds. Since it was the only thing to shot at, I gave it a try. Knowing that the duplex of the crosshair was my 350 yd zero, I held over approximately another foot and to my surprise the dog fell over. Of the various varmint rifle and calibers I own, this was probably the least likely of them to make that shot. Too much fun!

Don't have a 17 Remington but do have a 17 Fireball, the longest pdawg kill with it is 578yards. Took three shots and two windage adjustments. 30 Grain Kindler.

I like shooting the small stuff because it forces me to pay attention to the wind. The rifle I have is a little screwy, it likes to be loaded right on the edge of too hot which is sometimes a problem in hot weather, in cold weather it's fine.

Had a lot of 1st-shot connections with this 17 FB/25 V-Max out to 500ish using the Nikon BM mil-dot at it's highest power and smaller reticle subtensions. Loved doping the wind with it, and it was quite surprising how well it often worked--

Then the Leupold 2.5-8X LER optic goes on as my go-to fur rig mostly. This bobcat was taken at 350 yds. on the 2nd shot. Elevation turreted, windage via Duplex reticle calc.

Coyote at right about 309 yds ... one shot ... 2 spins and DRT. 25 Vmax at around 3950 FPS. I have shot a bunch of coyotes over the yrs with a 17 Rem. I have lost one ... he was running through the mesquites and make a quick shot through an opening and I hit back in the soft areas. Most of my kills were with the old Berger 25gr Match HP that they for some crazy reason quit making. I don't shoot my R700 LVSF anymore, I am shooting a Custom Howa actioned 223, 1-8tw and a Vamint barreled AR15 1-9tw with 65 SGKs. If the shooter is up to it ... the Ole 17 laser will get it done way out there.
