long throat in my Remington 700 swift

It seems to me getting a good measurement on how deep the throat is near impossible with any method. However, I made up a dummy round with a 55 v-max and ran it in the chamber then removed, measured, and then seated the bullet little by little until the bolt felt like it closed with no extra resistance. I did this with a 55 Nosler BT and it came out within a few thou of the Hornady when measured at the ogive. It seems I have about .150" of jump with a 55 v-max seated at 2.680" Is this more than normal. By the time I load the mag properly with the each rim in front of the one below it the top one may not fit. I am going to load all my starting loads based on the 2.290" measurement on the ogive which is what a 55 v-max measure with a coal of 2.68. Am I on the right track? I need to get a modified swift case to fit my Hornady coal gage but it doesn't seem to be very consistent either. >:(

Load them at the recommended COAL of 2.680 and shoot them. Most of the newer Remington's will have an extra long throat. I would not worry about it and just use what you have. Most of those Hornady and Nosler bullets like a longer jump and you may be pleasantly surprised. My loaded Swift rounds measure at 2.785 COAL with 55 BT and there is more than enough in the case neck to hold bullet.

My .220 Swift loads are ~3.05" long.

Load them to just fit in the magazine, and work up your loads at that length.

I agree with the above posts.

It would be nice to have the option to get closer to the lands. This is not an option if we use the equipment provided by the manufacturer as intended.

You could load them longer and feed them one by one. I've done this many times just to see if it makes a difference in accuracy. But,BEWARE --- The max load may not be interchangeable for a short OAL round to a long OAL round and visa-virsa.

The only other choice that I can think of is a custom chamber.

I had a similar problem in my 22-250 Ruger M77V. Changed out the magazine box for a 243 box and was able to increase my COAL to work best with my throat. You may be able to do the same with the 700.

Load one real long and mark it with a sharpie. Keep turning your die until the rifling marks just disappear. That will be your length to the lands with that bullet. It may take a few dummie rounds to get there, but it is certain.
