Long shank and short shank

muleman69

USMC -1st marine Div. RVN
Like to screw a criterion barrel on my salvage 112 action. I'm thinking 6.5x47,what shank would I need for this

You obviously meant large or small shank savage if a customer orders a barrel for savage first thing I ask small or large thread you can't hardly tell which .Odds is though you have a small shank.

Note that the above has changed somewhat on more recent models. All the Target Actions are large shank, and some of the newer models like the 10 BA Stealth, etc. are also large shank.

Standard shank is considered small shank. That's all Savage made in the beginning when your action was made. It will not fit the large shank barrel. You'll need a small shank barrel. BTW, the large and small shanks will shoot identically.

Anybody got some info on a 7RSAUM? Would I be able to use my Savage short action with small shank to build this, or do I have to have an action with a large shank?

I don't know that it's a hard and fast rule... some manufacturers will only sell pre-fits for magnum cartridges (particularly short mags) in large-shank barrels. Others, don't seem to care.

Northland Shooters Supply shows Criterion pre-fits for SAUM cartridges noted as large-shank only... but no such note for the Shilen pre-fits. Whether that's a typo, or an omission, or... dunno.

Proof Research lists both large and small shank options for cartridges like the .300 PRC, but large shank only for the .300 WSM.

You'll probably have to do some 'leg' work, calling/emailing various places (I'd include Patriot Valley Arms and Bugholes in that list) to see who will (or won't) do what.

Small shank barrel will work, so will a short action. Only issue may be in the OAL of your cartridge. Savage allows a 3.0" OAL in their short actions. Not sure how long the 7SAUM is with say 180s loaded long. That's something to think about. The short action/ small shank will work tho

Glad to help.

What caliber is, or was, your 112?
Is it round behind the ejection port? Or, does it have a flat?
Is the magazine box attached to the action, or is it stuck in the stock?
Action only,.308 bolt face and I believe it is round behind the port. No mag box or stock, starting from scratch.

The older ones had flat backs. I think they went all round in the early 2000s, maybe 1990s.

Savage has changed their numbering recently. For a long time, long actions were 3 digits(111, 112, 116 etc.). The short actions were 2 digits(10, 11, 12 etc.). Now, they are all 3 digits.

They also changed their magazine about 15 years ago. The old short action blind mag ones had a sheet metal mag box loosely attached to the action. The action had a couple slots on the bottom, at the front and back of the mag opening. Tabs on the mag box fit in these slots. These are known as staggered feed actions. The center to center distance between the action screws is 4.27" on them.

The newer short action center feed actions have the mag box in the stock, or have a detachable mag or hinged floorplate mag. The sheetmetal mag box is the same whether it is blind, detachable or hinged floorplate. The center to center distance between the action screws is 4.40.

The long actions have mag boxes similar to the short actions. Both center feed and staggered feed long actions have 5.00 screw spacing.

Just trying to figure out what you have. You'll want to know when you buy a stock.

Determining "Large/Target" shanks vs. "Small Shanks".

Looking at your rifle, compare the barrel nut with the picture below.

The short nut (5/8"), and the Standard/Small Shank barrel nut (7/8")

Or you can measure the OD of the barrel right in front of the barrel threads.

After looking at several hundred barrells, you can look at the barrel and tell if it's Small or Large!
