LONG ROUNDS IN REMINGTON 223--OR HOW TO GRIND UP A RECEIVER

I have a new build Remington 700 for Varmints and Target Fun It is a 7 twist barrel from Urban Rifleman--has been sweet so far shooting great with all weights of projectiles. It has been really extra good with 85.5 Bergers but I was forced to single load them until today. I modified an MDT 10 round mag to accept the longer rounds but then the tips hit the bottom of the receiver--I thought ummm--Notch it! After testing-- 90% of all the other rounds hit the ramp well above the notch location I planned so I figured if it does not work it will not hinder it from my normal use. So...I started grinding on the receiver--Took three times--a little more at a time--then I had to widen the slot I made in the mag as the staggered rounds required it--But finally! It will now cycle up to 2.540 OAL from an MDT 10 round mag--Yahooo!

Clever, but I sure hope, down the road, it does not cause issues, due to doing this to the receiver.
Way back when AICS mags became a popular thing this modification was needed for proper function (AICS non-blinder mags). Much hand wringing was done over the potentially weakened lug. Not much has ever come of it and it's pretty common place now. I've done a bunch of them. You'll also find many custom actions of today come with the cut right out of the box.

I was careful and checked beforehand--almost every normal round hits the ramp WAY above the cut--the long rounds I am using do too--I just got home from the range it worked like a charm! It was FUN loading those long 85's from a mag--Now I am curious about other brands and types of mags--The MDT metals were very easy to disassemble and put back --I left the spot where the two plastic half's butt together at the bottom to keep some support--It did seem to like 9 rounds and acted up a little when I started out with ten rounds in the mag--I will figure it out though...
Heck I never heard of it before was just back yard smithing and thought what the heck--I ported high $$$ race cylinder heads for a living so grinding that little on it did not scare me a bit--
Can't believe the topic does not come up more often as an easy fix
Now to do some research on mags and see what may work even better!
Cheapo PRS hack ( maybe) I watched one match and came home going ummmm what do I have that I can start with? Truth is I need two new knees to be honest

Urban I see what you mean but the way the plastic insert was made I just did not see how I could and get it all straight--The bolt does fall back far enough to do that--Maybe there are better mag brands for this deal?? Sure would be easier but in all honesty I saw no negative impact from the notch ( now that is is done without a disaster LOL ) design and make us some mags to do that I will take six--it could be a winner of an easy product to sell--heck there may be some I am just too new to know Now that I googled Rem notch job I see it has been done for a long while
Thanks for a fantastic barrel!!!!

I had to do this on my custom 243 Winchester using Berger Bullets. I cut the notch, modified the ramp, adjusted the mag lips, and removed the steel plate on my AI Mag. Works perfectly. And it's a tight neck
