Long range whistle pigs with 6mm Long Dasher

I started hunting with my new rig last week

My first full custom rifle. Inspired by 6mmBR.com, not sure if I should thank you guys or to curse, ha ha

6x47 Lapua Imp./40 degree shoulder/.271 neck,long dasher)

Stiller Diamondback action
Lilja 30" 8 twist LV barrel
Richards Custom varmint stock
Nightforce NXS 8x32,NP-2DD)

My two longest so far 778 and 810 yds.

First one was 778, took three shots to dope wind with help of a spotter, 15MOA elevation 3.75MOA windage.

A few days later got another,different field), had some luck doping wind, connected with 1st shot at 810, 16MOA ele. 1.75MOA wind

I have been "studying" boards for a year, best source of detailed info anywhere!

Load I am shooting now is 40.5gr N 160, Berger 105 Match BT .010 jamb, BR 4 primer, .002 neck tension @ 3115fps, ES < 15 fps.

Will group under 2" at 500yds if conditions hold. I am learning to appreciate the big influences of small wind changes at longer ranges, can turn a 1" group into a 4" one with just a slight shift!

Better velocity w H4350, but my barrel likes the N 160. I did find a node at 3225 fps w H4350

Berger 105 gr Match BT s are expanding on these long shots, but not a "lot", 3/4" to 1" at 800 yds.,depends how much bone structure is hit, of course)

My preference is to use the 105gr A Maxs for chucks, but the barrel said no, ha ha. I tried several diff powders,H4350, N160, N560, H4831sc, RL 22), and primers ,CCI 450, BR4, Rem 7 1/2, Fed 205Ms)

I am going to chamber a Broughton 5c HV 7.75 twist to see if I can get the A Maxs to shoot at the higher node, like to try the new Berger 108s too.,Tim North just happened to have one sitting in shop)

This "Long Dasher" seems to have a lot of potential.,understatement)

I think a 6.5x47 / 6x47 Lapua info page would be great, maybe an Improved version too. Seems like a lot of guys here are developing loads for these new configurations. It would be nice to have condensed source of info for them.

Here are some pics of me and my long range shooting platform the "Woodchuck Bucket"

Like shooting from a tree stump, with a platform that swivels 360 degrees

I built a mount to connect my rangefinder to my spotting scope. Mount can be adjusted, so spotting scope and rangefinder are both centered on same object. Only way I have found to get repeatable long range readings, is to shoot them from a stable base.

I would post thumbnails, but I haven't figured them out yet.

Very handsome rifle, and I bet she's accurate. What's you favorite load so far?

I love that spotting scope mount you've invented. And it looks like a fabulous spotter you've got hitched up to it.

We are definitely planning a 6mm-6.5x47 and a 6.5x47 Cartridge Guide page. We're just waiting for more info to filter in and we have a test rifle being built. Plus doing a cartridge guide from scratch is like building a whole mini web site! But reports like yours are very helpful...

Much better velocity w H4350, but not as accurate

I am going to try a different barrel to see if I can get the 105 Amaxs to shoot w H4350, that combo was easily reaching 3300 fps,found a node at 3225 fps)

I liked your rig and your invention so much I put it up in today's Bulletin. I did censor that high velocity node with the H4350. I know it's do-able, but I don't want people thinking they can necessarily get 3200+ with a different action/bbl combo.

If you have Excel or a manual log-book, do keep data records. We are particularly looking at the trade-off between velocity and accuracy. People are finding they can push this brass pretty hard, but so far, I don't think guys have been finding best accuracy way up at the top... but we need more data.

My improved version of the 6x47 Lapua has a 40 degree shoulder and reduced body taper.

Dave Kiff at PT&G did my reamer design, and he was the one I got the "long dasher" handle from.

The increased velocity potential of this cartridge is partially due to the slightly increased volume capacity.

I think it would be difficult to achieve same velocities with regular 6x47 Lapua,safely and sanely). Similar differences between 6BR and 6 Dasher.

I've modified the bulletin--it wasn't clear that you had improved the case. Interestingly I was just discussing the fact the both the 6.5x47 and 6-6.5x47 look to be running very well with H4350 but could use just a little more capacity because the brass can handle the pressure. It really is a "Bigger BR" in that respect.

Please, if you can, take a sharp photo of a couple loaded rounds and a couple fire-formed cases. One trick to get good autofocus results is put the brass on a flat, white surface,table top) and hold the camera a couple feet above your subject. Get it lit from a couple sides to diminish shadows.

I think your dual bracket is good enough that you should investigate a ball mount for a mini-tripod like the military uses. Getting the thing patented would be expensive, but you might find a guy with a mill who can make them. Already have two name ideas for you:

Optics Piggyback
and
Lazerback,play on "razorback") or Laserback

Here is a picture showing differences between 6.5x47 Lapua, 6x47 Lapua, and 6x47 Improved,Long Dasher)

I measured water capacities for 6x47 and the Improved version.


Water Capacities

6x47 Lapua 45.8 grains

6x47 Lapua Imp. 47.8 grains

*approximately a 2 grain increase


Has anyone run a Quick Load profile of these two versions to find a powder that will produce similar velocities to H4350 with lower burning temperature??

It would be nice to have a couple of alternative powders to try.

Sunbuilder; nice write up on your rig. I just built a 6.5X47 carry gun for feral pig and coyote, got my first coyote two weeks ago. Love the cartridge. I was thinking about getting a barrel for my bench gun in 6.5X47 just because I have the reamer for it but after this info maybe I should go for another reamer in the6X47 Improved. The cartridge looks great. Oh boy, the choices and the many ways to spend money!

Your killing me!! I lived in upstate NY for several years and had several farm I hunted G-hogs on and boy do I miss it! I live in Mo now but no Hogs. I go to Kansas every year and shoot P-dogs but I sure miss my Hog hunting

I just ordered a 6x47 Lap Bat, 28"Krieger 1-10, Jewel, McMillan stock. Hope to have it running for the trip this year. I plan on shooting 70-87gr bullets out to about 600 yds. Do you know of any loads for lighter bullets?
