Long Range weekend at Camp Pendleton, July 13-14

July 13-14, Santa Margarita Gun Club will hold a Long Range weekend at MCB Camp Pendleton, Range 117. Full details and pre-registration are available on our web site: [br]

Both days are 3 X 20 X 1000. Come on out and shoot in beautiful coastal San Diego weather and enjoy the fine Spring breezes. Learn to shoot in a vicious headwind and find the meaning of humility. ;)

I was wondering how you got so good at shooting Steve. Some ranges have that effect on the shooter.

It's true that shooting on a tough range is good training. Most other places then seem benign. The only problem is that most ranges don't have heavy headwinds. The few times I've experienced headwinds on other ranges, I've done Ok. [br]
I think that the Houston club for F-Open and Butner for F-TR are probably the best U.S. training grounds. Both ranges can be pretty tough and there is high level competition. Both ingredients are good for moving up to that next skill level. [br]
The guys that really have it tough are the Marine Sniper candidates at Camp Pendleton. Range 117 is where they must qualify. I bet they always do it after lunch.

I wish I could do both days >:( But due to mandatory OT with the VA :-X, I can only shoot on Saturday. I am looking forward to testing the new load! See you all there.

As I look at the temp and the dew point around here, a San Diego ocean breeze sounds great and a 3x20@1K is a Great Time. Sounds like a good time will be had..

It is fun, Rod. The weatherman is predicting 9 mph winds from SSW. That means they will blow straight up the valley. Due to terrain, we will likely see ~15 mph with gusts ~20-25, switching rapidly. It can be pretty frustrating, but we all shoot in the same wind. ::)

How many F-Class folks show up at your typical match? I would think with the population density and the facility, you are able to put on a great match..

Rod

We have ten firing points at Range 117. A typical match sees ~20-25 shooters, roughly divided between sling and F-Class. Our Mid Range matches are on Range 103, which has 150 firing points and is a nice range. We see as many as fifty for Mid Range matches because the HP and SR shooters are there. They shoot prone on Saturday and XTC Sunday.

Two days left. Weatherman predicts moderate temps and breezy.

That's Steve's way of saying 14 mph avg, gusts over 20 mph ;) . Come on out everyone, it's going to be some serious fun!

Nothing more fun than dialing in 8 min left then next relay going 9 min right... Keeps ya honest.... Lol. Have fun guys...

Part 1 in the books! Oh and what a day it was! I must say I am happy with the new rifle and load, things will only get better from here, I do believe. Congrats to Steve and Greg good shooting under tough conditions! Wish I could shoot with you guys on Sunday. Good luck.
