Long range magnum caliber?

Hey
Been thinking about taking my Sauer 202 and tinker with it a bit, it is currently an 300 win mag in the standard configuration, ie skinny barrel and a really skinny forend stock..

what id like is to get a heavy varming contour barrel and a wider forend for the bags or bipod..

Intended use will be mostly paper and varmints at range so power is not really a issue..

I am looking for something flat shooting, not too heavy recoil, magnum case preferring 6,5mm or maybe 7mm..
carthridge must fit the single column magazine and feed reliably..

Those ive been looking at the most are 7mm rem mag, 264 win mag and lately 6,5mm rem mag and of those
the 6,5mm rem mag is the most interesting atm, i know its an almost extinct chambering but brass, dies and reamer are available so its not an impossible route to go!

6,5 Rem Mag loaded with 130-140gr bullet and having the long magazine to keep them from going too deep into the case does sound pretty good and given the case shape it might be a nice way to go..

Both the 7mm rem mag and 264 win are an easy drop in but to be frank neither are really tempting

Been looking for more caliber options but not seen anything yet that pops out

any suggestions?

Regards

My suggestion would be: go for the 6.5 Rem Mag. a little warning about this case as mentioned by Ken Waters in his "Pet Loads" book. Make sure your gunsmith reams you a chamber with a slightly longer belt, in order to make sure your case headspaces on the shoulder and not on the belt.
This caveat aside, you can't go wrong with this equivalent of a 6.5-06 AI. Should the case be discontinued, you would still have the option of upgrading to 6.5-270 WSM or 6.5-7 WSM.

JMHO

Rather than taking what appears to be a very good general purpose .300 mag big game rifle, and turning it into some kind of varmint/target rifle...

Why not just build a 6mm or 6.5mm varmint/target rifle?

BTW, I've had excellent accuracy at long-range with a 7mm Rem mag, and with enough barrel weight & length, it's not at all bad from prone. Am thinking a muzzle brake would tame it even more. If I was starting with a general purpose magnum rifle, and wanted to go for long-range/precision shots, I'd just have a good smith install a top quality 7mm Rem Mag barrel and call it good.

Regards, Guy

go with the 6.5 rem mag you will love it I have been shooting one for 10 years it will do about anything the 264 will do.
They have a new one going now the 6.5 rcm it is the same size as the 6.5 rem mag without the belt. But do put it in a long action.
