Long-Range Coyote Setups

Thought it'd be nice to see what y'all are using to snipe fur with.

I think I'm gonna go with an XP-100 22 GT 17" Krieger 8T pistol I'm having built this year. Probably 80ish grain ELD-M or maybe the 77 TMK. Should be done very soon and then to the range.

My LR yote gun is a 224 Terminator which is my gunsmiths version of a 22-243 Improved, I think it has a 35 degree shoulder angle. Mine is built on a trued SA Rem 700 with a 8tw Krieger finished at 28 inches. I'm shooting 80gr ELD-M with RL26 and launching them at 3650fps.

Still my old 22-250 and 50 grain bullets. working for years. Then for closer shots or called in, I use 17HMR, 17FB, 20-223AI or 20SCC at various times.

There is something to be said for a flat shooting trajectory with plenty of energy such as a 22-250 Ackley to a 22/6mm Ackley using 75-80 gr bullets. Always thought the ultimate would be a 22/6 mm Ack pushing a 80 gr Amax/ELDM to 3600-3700 FPS. More allowance for small range errors. For longer range sniping off of roadkill deer baits I have used a 6.5x47 Lapua with good results out to 914 yards at night with night vision. I choose the 284 Shehane for 1000 plus yard bait hunting in the dark. This is a photo of my 1000 yard night kill last February in the dark with NV using a 284 Shehane.

Steve,

I still run the trusty 20BR XP-100 for coyotes under 500yds I use a 6 Dasher or 6-284 XP for longer ones. However Aaron is finishing up a 22-284 17" 1-8T that I plan on launching 80gr ELDs somewhere around 3500. How fast do you think the 22GT will be?

It might be a little bit until I play with mine, its a switch barrel 6.5x68 and I might have to kill a deer or two with that before swapping barrels over

What bullet of choice for the 6.5 x 47?

Nice Adam--my 20 BR XP will be starting this year also. Probably gonna get my 6.5 WSM XP up and running again also. Gunsmith shot at 7" gp. with it this past year at 1000 yds in Raton and beat all his match rifle buddies that particular day. GT just seemed perfect for the XP action. No doubt velocities will be between BR and Creedmore vels. 17" Krieger. Find out soon I hope. Not too many guys running them yet so little info available.

For my money. Nothing beats a Swift. Tommy Mc

Sako Varmint laminate for me in a 6 Dasher shooting 87 Vmax. Took a wolf with this set up a few years back. Started off with berger 95 hunting vld's but switched the vmax as it seems to be better at dropping them in their tracks.

Coyotes are, USUALLY moving about frequently ( changing yardages, to wind you ) and quite often, the Wind is blowing in Northern Nevada / Southern Idaho.
I now shoot, a Tikka T-3, in .243 Win caliber with, 87 grain V Maxes or, 87 gr HVD Berger's. Both bullets, are very accurate @ 3,150 FPS ( Sub 1/2 MOA ) and have LOW recoil ! I "Dial" the yardage as needed, but use, "Kentucky Windage" for any wind factor on my, 4.5 x 14 Burris ( I keep ballistic Chart and small Wind Meter ) in shirt pocket. Usually, I'm in sitting position, on a side hill slope, I put my Camo Pack on my chest to support the "Toe" of Rifle and use Hunter Specialties, shooting Sticks to steady the rifles forend ( a fairly precise Field "hold", that I also use, on Big Game ) I don't skin them as, these Bullets produce huge, shredded Holes ! Needless to say, Coyotes are NOT real thrilled with this, set-up.

That's some fine shooting. What night vision scope are you using?

my two coyote killers are... 22-243AI, shooting 80 amaxes at 3550.... and a 20-250AI shooting Berger 55's at 3770... both are coyote smokers. I only built them for long range coyotes...that is... over 400 yds.... anything shorter.... they are not necessary.... my CZ 204 covers those shorter ranges. They both have 300 yd zeros... so 400 yds is a simple hold over of 6 inches. Those 80 amaxes sure do knock a deer in the dirt as well. It is my BEST all around rifle and caliber.... everyone should own that caliber...LOL.
