Long Range Bench Rest stock

I need some guidance on a new project. I currently shoot 0-1000yds almost every weekend at my buddys private range. Up until now Ive been mostly interested in PRS shooting, Varmint hunting, big game hunting, and banging steel. Therefore all of my custom guns are on custom actions and "tactical" and "hunting" styled McMillan and Manners stocks.

I'm looking to get into the benchrest / F class game a little more. Shooting my 6x47 at 1000yds gets me good results on steel targets, but the McMillan A4 stock isn't cutting it when I'm shooting for group size or score.

I'm looking to piece together either a 6 Dasher or WSM wildcat on a BAT or Borden action.

How would a McMillan Tooley MBR stock do for an F class stock? Ive looked at the PR & T Lowboy, and Masterclass as well. I need some guidance in regards to choosing a benchrest stock.

McMillan has special purpose F Open and F- TR stocks that you might want to consider. I would take a look at the F-Open width rule, converting it to inches and consult with any manufacturer about the width of a particular model. I have spent some time at the range shooting (from a bench) the new McMillan F- Open stock, the Kestros and can report that it handles very well. Mine has the three way adjustable butt and adjustable cheek piece. I think that anyone would like the design.

I have a McMillian MBR and a few Shehane Trackers, prefer the Shehane stocks. Shot my best groups with the McMillian but like the tracker style and they return to battery better. Also prefer wood over glass

You really should decide if you plan to shoot Benchrest or F-class. You can build a rifle for both but it will hold you back in both sports. In Benchrest we do not have a width rule and the most popular stocks seem to be trending towards the 4" wide. 4" is nice because your standard top will take a bag that will fit a 4" stock with no mods. 5" an up need a custom top. We have a 1/2" rule for side contact. It make life much easier if you stock is only 1/2" tall on the side. F-open requires a max of 3" wide but has no 1/2" rule for side contact. In Br you will want to run a 6mmbr, dasher or my favorite 6bra in a 28" HV contour. Fopen will be a 30-32" straight 1.25" .284. You could build a 3" dasher/bra and shoot both but you will have a hard time in the wind with the 284s if you shoot fopen. Check with d&b supply, Mcmillan, and PRT. I offer a couple models as well. Mcmillan is going to be making a stock based on my requests as well.

JigStick,

You can't be too far from one of several Long Range Benchrest ranges. I suggest that you invest some time in visiting one of these ranges at least when there is either a competition in progress or when there are shooters practicing. Most shooters are glad to show you their rifles and maybe even allow you to get behind the rifle while it's on a benchrest set up. This is the best way I know of to recommend a stock, by trying it out under the circumstances in which it will be used.

Aside from the regular cadre of stock makers suggested already, do a quick search for others maybe not so well known yet fully capable of producing competitive rifle stocks.

Doan Trevor
S & S
Action Gun Works (Randy Dierks)
Bruce Baer
Shurley Brothers
Manners Composite Stocks
Joel Russo
Gunstocks Ireland (my favorite)
MCRS Tactical (Canada)
There are several new CNC router/mill companies which produce good lines of stocks for competitions. Do a search on this website

Regards.

You could come to Williamsport and see a bench rest match. SATURDAYS are light gun (17 pound). We have about 80 or so guns show up at a match and there are a wide variety of styles, including some custom ones. You could also bring your gun and shoot a match. 8 to 10 signers and 10 for record. If you win group or score you would need a shootout set also. It would let you get your feet wet and see a lot of different guns. Also, they would answer any questions you have and help you get on. Go to Pa1000yard.Com and see the dates of matches. The world Open in July will have over 30,0000 in prizes and about 130 shooters. Some are even given out on entry ticket. Last year it was a Nightforce Competition and you had a 1 in 130 chance of winning without placing anywhere. Matt

I would suggest the Borden action. Then call Jim Borden ( super nice guy ) and ask him where he would get a stock if he were making it for himself....;)

MBR is a great stock. I prefer the flat butt stock bottom of the Shehane MBR but it's crooked as hell so be prepared to have your gunsmith have to take special precautions or make plates to make it track accurately.

For that reason, I'll never buy another Shehane or tracker stock...there is more quality stocks out there. I've got a new McMillan Kestros coming and look forward to giving it a try.

Thanks guys. I participate in my local club matches here in pittsburgh, 100-600yd groundhog matches, and 100-200yd bench rest matches. Right now Im using my "tactical" 6x47 built by Dave Bruno. Im competitive, but the guys shooting full blown bench guns and FTR guns don't have to work near as hard as I do. Some guys come down from Ridgeway shooting 300wsm F class guns as well.

Yeah Im back and forth in regards to benchrest vs F-class. Dave Bruno is a buddy of mine, and is pushing me more towards a 6 Dasher in a benchrest style rifle. The only reason Im considering an F-class style gun is because I spend ALOT of time at our 1200yd range shooting steel plates. And shooting steel is more like F class shooting than bench rest.

As of right now Im considering the Borden action, the McMillan Tooley MBR, or maybe a stock made by Roy Hunter.
