Long range 22LR Ammo question

Question for you folks that do a lot of long range 22LR target shooting ( 100,200 yards ).
Have you guys done any shooting with 22LR Ammo that shoots 1400 to 1640 FPS ?
I know I would give up accuracy but I think I would not loose as much drop on the bullet.
I am looking for a rifle that would group this faster 22LR ammo for gopher hunting and target shooting ( not completion ). 2nd question what brand of rifle or rifle barrel would be a good match for this faster 22LR ammo ?. I have a bunch of this fast ammo that I want to utilize in the best rifle I can. Thanks. MD

Ok any others rifles you can think of that would shoot the 1400–1640 FPS good ? So as I understand it is the action and not the barrel I need to shoot the faster ammo ? Thanks. MD

Personally, I don't see how a particular action would favour high velocity ammo. I suspect Dusty may have been thinking ofMatch 64 rifles, as these are almost always found with a factory Anschuttz barrel. And he meant that the high quality if Anschutz barrels would get the best out of the ammo. I may be wrong.

Better and more knowledgeable shooter than me have suggested the barrel is the key component, providing the action is rigid enough, and delivers good ignition.

As for ammunition, consistent muzzle velocity/acceleration and bullet uniformity, are most important. Match ammo costs more because the factory put more time and effort into QC (and hopefully the load too). Match ammo is almost always subsonic too, as this is thought to suffer less wind drift.

The bases of my question is I have 1000’s of rounds of the CCI stinger ammo at 1640 FPS. Trying to find a rifle that would be a great match up for this fast bullet with a little longer case than other standard 22LR ammo. MD

Is your ammo 22LR? If it has a longer case then it might not be or does it just appear longer?

Most shooting long range use subsonic so you don't get transonic issues with stabilization but you have the ammo so just buy a rifle and try it out. How much you looking to spend?

To the ones that know more about this than I, would a twist rate other than the usual 1:16 help at all? To a degree this is chasing the unicorn. You would probably have to spend more on a custom twist rate barrel than it may be worth. I do understand wanting to use the ammo you have available though. Good luck with your quest.

Ammo that fast may shoot well in one of the old Suhls 150s. A lot of them had slower twist rates. 17 -18 twist.
I bought five of them at the same time several years ago and they all measured slow, one was a 19.

Don't know about now, but at one time Green Mountain made a specific barrel to shoot Stingers. I think it was for the 10/22 platform, but could be wrong. Stingers have never been known to be good on an accuracy side of things, but if hunting with them, they may be the ticket.

Good luck......Scott

BTW: I agree with the post on .17HMR for a better option if shooting ground squirrels. It's what I would use.

Target ammo and a Remington 40x will serve you well, RWS R100 is excellent for 200 yard shooting.

Ok. I just cannot go out a by a bunch of rifles and hope that it shoots the 1000’s of rounds of CCI stinger ammo I have. I was hoping that some o e had some 1st hand knowledge on a rifle that had some success. Will look at the Shula 150’s maybe I can find some one with rifle and have him shoot a few rounds or me and see how it groups. Thanks Marty

I've shot a lot of stingers out of various rifles and pistols and can tell you they are not particularly accurate out of any of them. They make as good defensive round out of longer barreled revolvers, so that is what I use them for. RFC site has a member that has done a lot of 200 yard testing and his best results are from SV ammo.

Stingers and accuracy are rarely mentioned in the same sentance. I have never seen Stingers shoot well in any rifle. Stingers are made as a hunting round, not a target shooting round.
What you may consider doing is to sell the Stingers and replace it twith a better grade of ammo. The best groups I have achieved with them is around 2" - 3" inches at 100 yards. They are a great gopher shooting ammo within their limitations, which in my opinion is 50 - 75 yds because hitting anything beyond that becomes a gamble. Either that or just shoot them up in a 10/22 as gopher ammo.

I agree. The only use I ever had for Stingers was a little Beretta that wouldn't function with anything but Stingers, and then not 100%.

You could always sell the ammo and buy better stuff.

That’s true. Might try to find someone with one of those Suhl 150 rifles to try some stingers out for me. Sounds like the stingers are not that popular for target or hunting. Thanks guys for the info. MD

I am guessing that you mean a Suhl rifle? If so the Stingers are unlikely to even chamber in them since they have a match chamber and the they will not fit a match chamber.
