Tough to beat the simplicity of a straight 22-243 IMO. Brass and dies are easy to get, no need to fireform, and cruises right along at 3500 or so with 75 and 80 grain bullets out of a 26 to 28 inch tube.
Kinda what I figured. 3400 is moving a 90 very fast. An 8 twist definitely should stabilize a 90 at those kind of speeds.my 22-243 AI shoots 90 bergers vld at 3400... from a 8 twist Brux barrel.... just great... easy one inch groups at 300 yds... I'll never shoot a faster twist...
Just starting to assemble my 22-250 AI and with an 8 twist barrel, my primary bullets will be 75-80s. Seems like 1200 Rds is doable at sane speeds with those bullet weights. I'll try some 90s as well eventually and I think 3000 fps is easily doable without pushing it. Hearing some guys saying 1000 Rds with 90s is what they seem to maintain accuracy up to. Then it drops off a bit.I am pushing 80 Berger VLDS that are Moly coated down a Lilja 3 land barrel at 3560 in my .22 Vais. It is a serious 1000 yard groundhog rifle. I have no idea if they would hold together without moly and/or 3 land. 8 twist and 29 inch barrel. I hope to try some 90s out for the first time later in the year.
22 x47L is a great option. My hunting buddy shoots one, and myself and our third calling partner shoot 22creedmoors with 8twist bbls running the 80.5gn bergers. Bad dudes. A fast twist 22cal running heavies at good speed (32-3500fps) is a hammer for yotes and such.Barrels are kind of like bullets, consumables. About the only requirement is being able to carry the bullets to the longer ranges ACCURATLY. The 22 BR as in the last post seems to have about the same MV as a 22-250 so that caliber is one of the choices on my list. Others on my list are the 220 Weatherby Rocket, 22 Dasher or BRX, 22-250 AI and the 22-6.5X47L. Haven't seen much on the last one so don't know how sucessful it is. No 22-284 or 22-243 Just don't like them.
Looking for personnel experences with any long range calibers in 22.
Thanks
George
That 80.5gn Berger will do just fine for deer. I have done some forensic digging on coyotes etc that I have hit with them out of my 22creedmoor. Nasty, to say the least. Bigger chunk of bullet I have found so far has been a piece of jacket the size of a pencil eraser diameter. If you have a load already shooting that we'll with that bullet, run it with confidence.Have a new 22-6mm with a 30" Krieger 1-8 that I am just starting to develop loads for. Best so far is the 80.5gr. Berger with Norma MRP and Win brass. Most accurate load gives 3540fps which is about 1-1.5gr below max. and 3 shot groups of 0.12". Planned to start working up a deer load with the Barnes 70 gr. TSX this week but 14" of rain have put me on hold. I don't see it as a high volumn, fast shooter, but as a fun gun.
A well deserved "thank you" to 40x guy for his suberb discussion on the 22s.
