Long or Short Action ?

cncmill

Erick Crouthamel (Crouthamel Precision)
Going to build a 284 Win or Shehane single shot for my next BR rifle. Do I need a long action? I have a 6.5-284 single shot in a short action now and works great. The only problem is that I have to take the bolt out to eject a loaded round. Not a big deal. Am I right in thinking this will be fine for the 284 also or will the 7mm bullets add to much length to load easily?

Thanks,

Erick Crouthamel

I'd recommend the LA ... why fight with a shoe that's too small to fit your foot?

+1

Though traditionally a short action round, I've built two different 6.5 Rem Mags on long actions to accommodate Berger 140gr VLDS in the magazine and for ejecting unfired sounds. Works perfectly. Would never build that caliber any other way.

My brother runs a .284 Improved for F-Class; I run a 7 WSM for F-Class. They both run over 3.1"" long when loaded. We both remove the bolt to extract a loaded round (from the rear of the action, not from the port). We run them on Short Actions. You can certainly make it work if you remove the bolt. Granted a Long Action is easier, but you can make the Short Action work.

I run the 284 in a couple of XP-100's with put a problem other than pulling the bolt to extract a loaded round like cncmill does..

Thanks for your replies everyone. Looks like I will be ok with either one. I never make a stock for a long action yet so maybe this will be the one.

Thanks,

Erick
