You didn’t give a date, but I think it is amazing the level of precision that was adhered to even in the late 19th century.

The two main transportation entities were at the fore front, that being, The Rail Road Shops and the Marine Industry.

My Dad learned the machinist trade working in the Rail Road shops in the 1930’s. He got his first job when he was 13.
 
There is a machine shop about a mile from my house, housed in what looks like a ww2 aircraft hanger. This area used to be big steel country. The gent and his brother who own it have been in business there since I was a kid and I am 60 now. I have had them do some very simple plate steel fab for me and they are gems to talk with. However, I am pretty sure that not one single chip has been removed from around the 60-70 machines in there in 50 years! But when stuff breaks in local industry (latest I saw were GIANT mixer blades from a local sheetrock mixing plant that were twisted like corn curls when the product had some form of impurity and hardened) they call these guys because NO ONE knows how to machine anymore around here, much less has the tools. Pretty neat to know them. Sadly, they have no family and I imagine when age wins, the place will be auctioned to some scrapper.
